Super machine!!! Had mine problem free for 9 years!
I have bought three of these sewing machines. My first one was purchased at Walmart nine years ago and two were purchased from Amazon for gifts. Additionally, after using mine, all of my friends who were in need of a sewing machine also rushed out and bought it. Why? Because even a brand new seamstress can thread it, and easily sew without confusion or stress. It is quiet and lighter than the old all medal ones if you don't have a sewing room and need to move it from storage to the table. I have not encountered the tension problem that can cause frustration when sewing garments with different fabrics. I had a sewing class at my house and assisted many girls and mothers with their various machines and some are so temperamental that it makes sewing almost a chore. This one stood out above the rest in ease of use, handling different tasks with quick change feet and easy stitch selection. It even has a three speed lever that allows you to limit the speed of the needle even with the pedal pushed all of the way down, which I find extremely useful when teaching my children how to sew. While this machine is low priced it is a quality machine so don't compare it to other lower end machines hoping to save a dollar or two. I have another lower end Brother that I bought for one of my daughters back when this machine was $300, and it does not perform nearly as well as this one. The Brother CS6000i is a higher level quality machine at a knocked down price because as new models come out, Brother naturally wants you to buy them. However, this one has it all and now sells at a reasonable price! Additionally, this machine has all the features that anyone would possibly need to sew clothes, quilts and household items. There are specialized feet and accessories available that can take this machine to a higher level if you need it. I recently spent the money on all the specialuzed feet because with new machines always coming out, I was worried after nine years they would eventually discontinue selling them. However, they are not necessary just extra such as a binding off foot if you don't have a serger (which I have). I used to own two different singers and was quite happy with them and when they broke naturally I was inclined to purchase another one. However, I love this machine and have found this Brother reliable, constant and worth every dollar. I have recently checked the web and have found this price is still unbeatable. I have owned mine for over 9 years and it still works just as well as the first day I opened the box.

good quality for the price
This is my second experience with sewing machines. My first was a toy Singer sewing machine that I just returned because it was was dead on arrival (well, shortly after actually). That was a Christmas gift for my daughter - a great idea, and though we had not thought of giving her one ourselves (my wife does not sew either) she was very excited about it when she opened it. Unfortunately when I called the Singer toy sewing machine support line they recommended returning it because they suspected a faulty part that they did not have in stock. That turned out to be a lucky break for us. So we ventured to Sears to check out what else was available, where we saw the Singer 7442 and a few cheaper models. It seemed like it would be nice to able to do more than just simple stitches, and the prices were not all that different ($140 - 200). A quick look at Amazon at the 7442 lead us to this Brother. Because the reviews were slightly better for the Brother CS6000i (and because I had just returned a Singer, and was not all that excited about getting another of that brand) I bought the Brother. After using it for a few days I am very happy with this purchase. I gave it five stars, because for the price it really is a very nice machine (which you can read about in other reviews here). Easy to use, with lots of options that actually work and do make it easier to use. It does seem to have high quality parts where it matters. It is fun for her to have the wide variety of stitches, and the one step button hole feature might be useful if she gets more into sewing. But nothing is perfect, and so here are the downsides that I did not see much written in other reviews are: It comes with a cheap (bottomless) cover that can't be called a case. It can't even really be called a dust cover since it has a hole near the top so you can reach the handle of the machine to carry it. It doesn't hold the additional pieces of the machine either. Brother should have just just saved that poor tree instead of including this 'case'. I'll be storing the machine and the additional parts in the original box and foam packaging. Although that is a quite a bit bigger than really necessary, it will provide much better protection than the 'case'. It's too bad they didn't spend just a little more on the box packaging and give up on the 'case' idea. They could have made the box a very functional and protective storage mechanism if they just made it easier to pack. The machine is constructed with a fair amount of plastic (though it seems to be metal in the places where it matters). The 25 year guarantee gives me some hope, but in general when I think of something made of plastic with electronics in it, longevity does not come to mind. When I was looking at the antique Singers (401a, etc), all made of metal, still working after 30-40 years, I felt a pang of anguish for our society that has shifted from making and buying high quality long-lasting products in the US to off-shore produced planned obsolescence. What a waste of resources, pity about pollution through the whole process, not to mention the jobs. I will be surprised if the LCD and electronics in this system are still working in even 10 years (I'm going to try holding on to the receipt for the life of the 25 year warranty because I bet it will come in handy at some point). Maybe I'll tape it to that cheap cover.... The manual is quite good (without really knowing anything about sewing I was able to get the machine set up and sewing in about an hour), but would be much better if it were specific to this model. There are many places in the model where it says, "Or you can do this if your model has this feature." Well, there are times when I'm reading it when I'm not sure if my model has that feature, and it takes some time to figure it out. It really seems like Brother should be able to print different versions of the documentation for their different machines at not much extra cost. I would pay a few more dollars in the overall price to have a customized user manual. On a positive note, every time I've hit one of those sections so far, this model does have the feature.

Awesome machine for this price!
I have actually bought three of these machines - the first was for me - after not having had a sewing machine for years, I missed sewing, but I didn't have a budget for my dream machine. This one had great reviews and the price was crazy low for all the features, so I took a chance. It turned out to be smooth and reliable, so easy to operate! I loved the buttonholes that it made and the overedge stitches for seam finishing. I loved it so much that I bought another one for my mother in law, and another one for my best friend. They're quite sturdy, considering all the plastic in the housing. Very easy to work with and advanced enough that a new sewist will not outgrow its capabilities quickly. Nice stitch quality with a lot of decorative and utility stitches built in. I like the speed control and a Stop/Start button on the front of the machine so that you don't have to use the foot control. This was necessary for my friend who is a paraplegic. I don't recall it being particularly noisy, even when sewing heavier fabrics like "cork leather" or waterproof canvas. It handled all the fabrics I use most often though I did have to hand crank through the heaviest seam junctions. I eventually gave mine away, so I don't know how it's doing, but the other two are still functioning just fine at about 10 and 12 years old. Amazing amount of versatility and reliability for this price. For the beginning hobby sewist, I would consider this a starter machine - use it and upgrade when it dies - at this price, it's almost disposable. Add a Brother 1034D serger at about the same price and you're set to do any kind of sewing you like.

Perfect First Sewing Machine
I was pleasantly surprised to find out the cost of this sewing machine. My sister is an avid sewer and she recommended this machine to me. I am so happy I purchased this machine for my first sewing machine as the price is great, quality is great, and it's easy to use! Note: I have done very minimal sewing on other sewing machines. This would be one or two simple and small projects, following directions and imitating what I was being taught and then not touching a sewing machine again for years until I followed this routine again. So, I pretty much consider myself a first time sewer. The price of this machine was a steal on Amazon. The quality really is durable. It isn't a very heavy machine and it comes with a great cover case so that the machine doesn't collect dust. I leave my machine out so, I am not unpacking it and packing it back up every time I use it, but if you do plan on unpacking and packing up regularly, it would be a quick process. I couldn't believe how easy this machine was to use. Reading the directions is a MUST. Whether you're a first timer or experienced, it's important to know the specifics of the machine. Threading the machine is simple as the flow the thread should follow is marked with numbers, as well as how to insert the bobbin. You can use the automatic settings or the presser foot to sew. I find that I like to use some of the automatic features, such as the button to lower the needle, but I prefer to use the presser foot. If you're worried about how much pressure you're applying, fear not! The presser foot on this machine is not super sensitive. Press a little and it goes slow, press a little harder and it goes at a nice steady pace, push it to the floor and you're sewing at lightning speed (at least that's how I felt when trying it out for the first time). It's perfect for a first time user. In the few months that I've owned this machine and as a first time sewing machine owner, a few tips: -Read the instruction manual and follow along -Buy some practice fabric or use old shirts (nothing stretchy) to practice the basics. Remember, it's okay if you mess up! Re-threading and practice are the only ways to get comfortable. - Try out both the automatic and manual settings on this machine. You may find one easier than the other. Overall, I would highly recommend this machine to anyone looking to purchase their first sewing machine, as well as other skilled sewers who want a machine with a few bells and whistles.

Great sewing machine, especially for beginners
This review is for the CS6000i, and I see that they came out with an updated version - the CS7000i. I’m sure that machine is every bit as good as this one! I've had this machine for 6 years and had never once used a sewing machine before I bought it. I learned how to sew on this machine and let me tell you, it has been a work horse for me. I've sewn clothes (including denim), quilts, and crafts on it just fine. The things I love about this machine, PROS: It's easy to get the hang of and easy to use. The learning curve is short. It doesn't feel fragile, like I might break it. I have done so many dumb things that could break it and it shrugs off my mistakes without any issues. The instruction manual is REALLY REALLY helpful. I consult it all the time. I also have it bookmarked on my phone for quick reference. The automatic needle threader works wonderfully and is a dream to use. It has a slider that controls stitch speed. The buttons are really intuitive. And I’ve never once broken a needle while using it! EVER! I recently upgraded to a fancier machine by a different company, but I find myself going back to my Brother machine for things like sewing buttonholes, or things that I know it does well and I don’t want to figure out how to do on my new machine (every sewing machine has a learning curve, so this may change over time). CONS: The working space is REALLY TINY. Quilting on it is a bit of a chore. The light on it is terrible and so dark. I ended up buying a rechargeable LED-type light to use with it. I’ve attached a picture with my new machine to show you how poorly the light on the Brother machine looks in comparison. For these reasons, I only give it 4 stars. Things to note: If it is sewing poorly, or the thread is nesting, or you have tension problems, MOST of the time the issue is that the bobbin/inside case needs to be cleaned. I can't tell you how many times cleaning it with the tools it came with corrected whatever issue I was having!

Glad I got this Brother!
I shopped around for a new machine and almost went with a world famous name brand, until I really read the user comments. The famous machine very similar to this one, was getting comments having to do with the timing of the motor which is manufacturer error solely and not an easy thing to get fixed which with a brand new machine you shouldn't have to do in the first place. With this Brother machine the negative comments IMHO have to do with people not reading or following the directions. I have been using this machine daily since it arrived and so far I just love it! The needle threader works fine, I have no trouble with it at all. I have tried every single feature of this machine, all the stitches, the buttonholes. One of the only things I find kind of "cheap" is the markings on the button hole attachment, while some are marked the others on the sides are not and are a royal pain to try to read on white plastic, it wouldn't cost that much to dab some paint on those markings or to make the thing out of metal. I find that threading the machine is extremely easy to do and the bobbin is a snap to wind and put in place. My only other complaint is the work light, it really is not very strong at all but that can be got around. This is a true value, a great home machine, an extension table which I find invaluable, a cover to keep dust off, several sets of needles, bobbins, punch, screwdriver and just about every attachment made for this machine. The only attachment I bought separately was the 1/4 inch quilting foot, which I really didn't need but it's nice to have, and I only paid $9 for that. I will most likely shop around for a carrying case for this machine, it's worth protecting. I learned on a 1942 famous name brand S and then was given a 1979 second hand machine, another famous name brand with a K which has been nothing but a mess all these years. I was going to go with a new machine, famous name S because I was comfortable with the name and trusted it but I have since found out that the machines are not what they used to be. I decided to take a chance on this Brother and so far I am really glad I did. I feel I got real value with this. Let me just say here that if you are going to be working with lots of heavy fabrics then stop being cheap and spend the money to get a machine built to do that, don't complain that this machine breaks or messes up. If you want to do normal home sewing or quilting then this machine has what you need to accomplish those tasks. UPDATE Feb. 2015 Just finished my first quilt on this machine, had no trouble at all. Followed the directions on using the correct needle and good quality thread, gave it one cleaning just to be on the safe side, wasn't a bit of nothing in there but any machine needs cleaning. Took the advice of not using canned air to blow the lint into the machine and used a small paintbrush and a vacuum. Didn't care for the little brush that came with it. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones and didn't get a so called lemon I don't know but so far the machine has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it. I saw where one person had a bit of trouble with it moving some on the table, I had that happen too so I got some of that kitchen drawer liner, can't think of the name of it to save me, but it's the waffle type rubber stuff. Put some of that under my machine and it ain't moved since. :)

Brother CS6000I Sewing Machine
I am not a expert seamstress by any means, as I have only sewn the most simplest of children's dresses and shorts (and only with the help of my mother!), but I haven't bothered to learn to sew because of the sewing machine I already had. It gave me a lot of grief, and after spending entirely too long just trying to sew my kids a couple of "supergirl capes" I decided that if I was going to ever use a sewing machine again it had to be better than this old one of mine. I picked the Brother CS6000I due to all the good reviews it got, and also the fact that it did not cost very much. It arrived 2 days after I ordered it and I have absolutely no complaints about it yet. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and have actually begun to sew my daughters some dresses (and more shorts) without my mom's help using this new machine. But when it first arrived I had to study it for awhile. I am the sort who has to read all the directions, instruction manuals and study something before I'm ready to try it. After doing so, I got some scrap cloth and started trying out the various stitches. I was very pleased! This machine ran like a top, did everything I asked it to and will easily sew through many layers of cloth. I tested it pretty good and afterwards had to call my mom to tell her how neat it was! I like being able to take it with me, visually it is nice to look at, it tells me what presser foot to use on the stitches I select, and is pretty much dummy proof. It is so easy to load the bobbin and have the thread automatically come up. If you've used a dinosaur like my old one, that was a long and laborious task. Just the simple things on it save so much time and frustration. And something that I found to be incredibly neat was the fact that you can see the bobbin (through the clear plastic cover) and can know when it's getting low on thread. I hate sewing a seam and in the middle of it somewhere I run out of bobbin thread. That won't happen with this machine unless I just fail to look at the bobbin. I feel I made a very good purchase. UPDATE: 10.25.14 - I still love this machine. I have three other sewing machines now and this one is still my favorite. It never fails me, it sews like a charm and it's very easy to use. I have a very expensive Singer sewing machine that wouldn't sew a stitch on stretch fabric and the Brother sewed it perfectly the first time. You can't go wrong with this simple machine. It's my favorite.

Machines for my sewing club
I have been sewing for about 40 years and am just getting started as a volunteer sewing instructor for 4-H. After much research and reading many reviews I purchased three Brother CS6000i machines from Amazon.com for my club. I sew contantly, mostly making dance costumes and clothes. This is not the machine I would select for ME as I need a more "heavy duty" type of machine. I currently own a Brother Innovis 500D and it is satisfactory for my use, but I would like better. However, the price for what you get is what sold it to me. I gew up and learned to sew on an old Singer, owned my own Singer until it broke, then owned a Brother, a Viking, and a Baby Lock. So, I know a bit about sewing machines. The CS6000i seems to be a great machine for beginners or for those who will give it average use. It also has some nice features for quilters. For my club I wanted something that would be easy and quick for my 3rd - 6th grade students to learn and use. I wanted a one step button hole maker, a drop in bobbin, and few decorative stitches. In addition, I really wanted a computerized sewing machine that would tell my students what foot to use with each stitch selection - however, this "wish list" item would be decided by cost. The CS6000i fit the bill and it has the computerization I really wanted for my students. The auto needle threader was a bonus, but is difficult to learn...but works well if one can figure it out. I like it but my 9 year old daughter prefers to thread the needle manually. I have yet to try it with my students - that is for next months classes. One of the machines had tension trouble right away. I rethreaded and changed the bobbin a few times, adjusted the upper tension, with no luck at fixing the problem. Then I remembered reading a review about the thread type. I switched threads and it worked. The funny thing is the other two machines will work with the thread I took out. Oh well, rule of thumb, these machines may not like some types of thread. Bobbin winding. Two of my machines had trouble winding the bobbin evenly. The thread would not go to the top of the bobbin on its own. When I compared the three machines I immediately notice that on two of them the metal Thread Guide (step 1) was bent in toward the machine and one Thread Guide was straight up. It was no surprise that the two machines with the bent Thread Guides were the ones that would not wind the bobbin evenly. My guess is that this piece can bend during shipping or with the cover. This is a really thin peice of metal and it was very easy to move it back into a straight position. Once that was done the bobbins wound evenly. It was a good thing that I had three machines to compare. Inserting the bobbin. Two of my machines insert easily - like it should. With one of my machines I have to make sure the thread catches in the metal part under the first plastic strip (which looks like a long flat toothpick). If the thread does not catch, the bobbin thread will not have any tension and your stitches will never be right. (This is mentioned in the manual with pictures.) I quickly learned how to hold the thread at the right angle to get it to catch. I can also apply a bit a pressure (hold down) to the small plastic piece while inserting the thread and it will catch. The cover. I agree with most reviewers that commented on the cover that it is almost worthless. There is no bottom to it and you can not cover the machine with thread in it. Yet, I have found a way to adapt it to what I need in my class. To save on the cost of thread we use cone thread (more yards for the cost) and I have a cone thread holder for each machine. Since the thread is now on it's own stand and not on the machine I can cover the machine with it threaded (thread and thread stand are on the outside). Obviously, this would not work well if you had to move the machine. This is a light weight machine which means it has a lot of plastic parts. Plastic does not last as long as metal. True, plastic parts do not cost as much as metal to replace, but labor charges are still the same. I don't expect my machines to last more than 5 years - either due to plastic parts, computer wear, or student use. It comes with a 25 year warrenty, but look at what that covers. The real warrenty is 1 year, just like many other machines. When this machine breaks it may be more cost effective to replace than to fix. Remember, just like a car, keep mantainace and cleaning fees in your budget. Your machine should last longer with proper care and mantainace. I gave the CS6000i five stars because I think it is a great machine for the price. When the club can afford it we will purchase a 4th machine. For my sewing club I think the Brother CS6000i is the perfect fit. However, time and use will be the true test. It would be great if everyone could update their reviews a year or two later.

Easy to use, sews vinyl/denim, nice extras
I bought this machine to replace an old Singer that had been in our family for about fourty years. About a year and a half ago, I discovered cosplay, and I’ve been sewing my own costumes since. My old machine was struggling after so many years, and I wanted options like fancy stitches and one-step buttonholes. This machine absolutely stepped up to the task. I can see through multiple layers of vinyl (granted, not at top speed, but still at a decent clip), the fancier stitches look gorgeous, and I love the little extra features that I’ve never experienced before. The see-through bobbin case is a big plus for me, as I love being able to double-check that I have enough thread. The needle threader, which I’ve never had before, works like a charm, and it takes me barely twenty seconds to retread my machine now. It’s also way quieter than my old machine, and just has a nice sound about it. All of the accessories that came with it work well. The walking foot is a revelation, and my new favourite toy when sewing stretch fabric. As aforementioned, it’s really easy and quick to re-thread the machine. There’s a sticker with a simple diagram up top, and each piece that you use when threading the machine is numbered. It’s pretty easy to switch out needles and feet. The computer part works well; I have no issues scrolling quickly through the stitches, and I appreciate that it tells you which foot to use for which stitch. I’ve sewn through a lot of different types of fabric, and this machine has held up well under all of them. I wanted something that was multi-purpose but had more options than my ancient Singer offered. This one was a fantastic choice, and I’m really glad it’s the one I got.

Easy to use and super quiet !
I am autistic and very sensitive to sound. I have wanted a sewing machine for a long time because i sew everything by hand and some things can take hours for something very small. This machine is very easy to use for beginners, quiet and enjoyable. I can’t really say much on weight as I’ve never owned a machine before but it’s light enough for me to carry from upstairs to downstairs when I need to use it and the case keeps it well protected.
