- Maca is an adaptogen, a natural product that adapts to the age and gender of the user and affects them accordingly. Maca powder can be added to smoothies and cereal as well as in baking and breading.
- The Maca plant is grown at the extreme altitude of 12,000 to 15,000 feet in the Andes Mountains of Peru, where only alpine grasses and bitter potatoes survive. The root has been used for at least 2,000 years by indigenous people of the region for energy, stamina, and fertility. Inca warriors ate Maca before battles.
- When Peru was colonized, Spaniards noticed their livestock were not reproducing in the high altitudes. After the locals showed the Spaniards that feeding them Maca boosted their animals’ fertility, Maca was accepted as a currency to pay taxes. In Peru, Maca is eaten by men and women, adults and children. It is most commonly mixed with oatmeal for breakfast. It can also be added to smoothies or your morning coffee or tea.
