Q: Has anyone used this product for an older child about 8 years old or is it geared for younger children/babies?

I have 4 boys under 6, all love it, I even bought one for myself. Been using it for 4 years and I even packed in luggage for myself in hotel. I have a hard time falling asleep and this does the trick. Only 23 minutes but usually works, wish it went a bit longer! I just hit the button again in the rare case I haven’t fallen asleep in 23 minutes. Without it I take about an hour to fall asleep

Q: Is the light strong enough to project waves to cover an entire room?

Yes! There is also a brightness control on the bottom. I have a 10x10 room, the entire ceiling and the walls from the height of the turtle are bathed in the "under water" light. I put it on the ottoman in the center of the room but even on a taller dresser it has great coverage. It is bright enough to change a diaper by too.

Q: Is there an option to turn off the sounds/music and just have the projected light?

There is! You can play the music or water noises alone or with the projection. You should also know you can have the projection move or stay stationary as well as change the brightness.

Q: Does this have a large button to turn it on? I'm wondering if my toddler could turn it on herself if she woke up and wanted light.

The buttons are small and there are three of them. One to turn the light on/off, one to turn wave sounds on/off and one to turn the wave `motion' on/off. The buttons are all the same size, so it might be confusing. My son is 11 months old and can press the buttons but it is random and not purposeful. My 1.5 year old niece also has a turtle and I know she turns it on by herself although I am not sure if she does in the middle of the night when it is dark. It would be nice if the main `on' button was larger.
