Come on, it's Pixies.
Definitive LP to have, please note tracks are arranged slightly differently from CD, but ..come on, it's PIXIES. I grew up in soviet union occupied country, we has to smuggle copies of tapes, and this was an eye opening album...along with FUGAZI, obviously. I had a friend arrested by KGB for having a taped copy of thus album...good times.

A "Planet Planet Of Sound" like no other bands at the time.....
Beautiful vinyl pressing of a band who I first saw in a small club when I lived in Jamaica Plain/ Boston in the mid to late 80s called " Green Street Station" that's no longer in existence(Saw Nirvana there too!), I was in a audience of maybe 30 people when a band called The Pixies proceeded to blast through a short set of ( Then) indescribable music ,to say I was hooked immediately is a understatement, I saw them numerous times and it was akin to seeing The Velvet Underground,a band that never made it " Huge" but 30 plus years later are world renowned,my two complaints though is that they should have added " The Purple Tapes " to make it complete and the portrait of the topless dancer on the front cover is so minimized( It's art darn it!! l.o.l" )like I mentioned, the pressing and mastering ( Of the vinyl version) especially the " Live" bonus set which has been bootlegged for years but sounds so much better than my " Grey area Cd" , if your a fan, buy this now before it goes out of print!!

Surfer Rosa rides the 4AD wave once again.
I've always loved the Surfer Rosa album. When it first came out the Pixies were on the vanguard of the 4AD label's sonic assault - or was it a sonic seduction? Whatever it was, it was a perfect moment in time for this quirky, chunky album on its sumptuous, esoteric record label. I already have a CD version which includes the Come on Pilgrim EP but I bought this one for the live disc. The packaging is sturdy and the inner sleeves are OK. I'm not crazy about the way the lyrics and song selection are presented but the music is still fresh and edgy. This album and Doolittle will always be my go to Pixies albums.

Product opened
Product came already opened. Not sure if it is brand new or used. Sounds good and everything was included, but the shrink wrap was split on one side, meaning that it might have been previously played. This was confusing to me.

5 * music 1 * packaging.
The album is magnificent but if you want this, you’ve bought it on cassette and CD over the years already haven’t you, possibly more than once. So music wise this is fantastic stuff. What I want to speak about is the awful packaging (3CD version). Mine arrived and the cards holding the CD’s have come lose, this is because they are very poorly designed, literally just glued to one side of the (otherwise rather lovely) hard back outer package. The other side has the booklet stuck to it, bizarrely whoever made mine must have been eager with the glue as half the booklet was also glued closed. Oh well, just a one off I thought. Nope, a mate has near exactly the same issue and a unwrapped version I looked at in a local indie was the same. Great music, poor packaging, just give me a gatefold any day.

Not the celebration it could have been.
Leaving aside the packaging issues, this is a pretty sorry way to treat some truly excellent and original music. 4AD gets a thumbs-up for releasing The Fallout Shelter officially, but otherwise this is not a patch on the Doolittle 3-CD set. Would it have been asking too much for 4AD to have licensed the other tracks from the Come On, Pilgrim sessions from Frank Black and/or Cooking Vinyl? Then we could have had the whole lot together for the first time ever. THAT would have been a cause for celebration, but I'm beginning to think that will never happen. And why on earth didn't 4AD include the single versions of Gigantic and River Euphrates, the latter being far more powerful in its longer version? Then there's the single-only live tracks: Vamos and the wonderful In Heaven. They got all the singles/B-sides/demos/sessions together for the Doolittle set, so why couldn't they have done the same here? Overall this is a missed opportunity and, to be honest, a pretty lazy release seemingly compiled by somebody who hasn't bothered to check for any potential extras. But that seems to be the first rule of archive releases these days: always leave off at least a couple of tracks that any fan would include and which are easily available.

Music 5 stars, packaging 0
In this package you get Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Live From The Fallout Shelter. Music is top notch but you know that already, remastering (to my ear) is quite good as well. But the packaging... CDs are housed in glossy cardboard sleeves without any additional lining, glue that holds the sleeves together applied to the inside seam, so best case you keep scratching your CDs as you struggle to pull them out (sleeves are rather economy in size), worst case you'll find your CDs glued to the inside. The latter happened to my Life From The Fallout Shelter CD. I eventually managed to pull .. no, rip it out, really, you can see all paper and glue residue in the pictures. It skips on a couple of tracks, so my copy is going right back. If the manufacture cares to investigate a smarter way of packaging CDs they can pick up a Bowie box set, just as an example.

New packaging doesn’t add anything.
Amazing music and will not disappoint but packaging is a bit underwhelming, the new artwork doesn’t add anything and considering there are 3 discs they could have used a gatefold sleeve. If you have the original records, like I do, I’d not bother and get it on cd instead for the bonus material.

Pixies' Golden Years
The two albums are amazing, can't deny that, and the live performance was incredible. The packaging is flawless and extremely well presented. The item itself even contains a small booklet for collectors or fans. Makes for a perfect gift, but I just wanted to by it for myself, couldn't resist. The item is amazing and the recordings are very good quality.
