Around the Block with Judy Hopkins: 200 Rotary-Cut Blocks in 6 Sizes

Tons of Patterns!
This is a great reference book. It has a lot of traditional patterns, and gives the measurements of all the pieces in each block, with a picture of how to put them together. The great thing is that she gives gives each block in five sizes. I am not mathmatically inclined, so I have great love of this book. I find that a lot of the patterns in magazines are just renamed traditional patterns, or have a tiny change. If you like stars, there are a ton of stars, including the variations. Ditto Jacob’s ladder, which also has many variations. It is easy to transfer the patterns to graph paper and color them in, if you like to work that way. I am not computer savvy enough to use the programs happily, I tried it.When I did block of the month for my guild for two years, this was one great resource, though I also used many other sources. I have used enough of these patterns to be worth buying the books. If you want colored pictures and other information, like how big the borders need to be, you really won’t find it here, nor color inspiration’. Although each block is shown in color at the front of the book, it isn’t a photo of a cute block, just random colors, not meant to inspire you. But I find the blocks themselves inspiring!

Gotta Have It
This is not a technique book nor is it a typical pattern book, it is a recipe book, all the ingredients are given and you are assumed to have the skills. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who has at least one year of quilting under their belt. Sure a beginner can handle it but it isn't geared to the fresh start. One of the great advantages the book offers is a color representation of the pattern and then in the recipe area you see the block in gray scale. To view a block without color gives you the freedom to choose if you want to work in monochromatic or several colors, your minds eye isn't limited to a picture provided by the author. There is so much to be learned letting your own natural choices free to assign the colors. My friendship quilting group uses this book as well as the follow up book "Around the Block Again" as a primer for selecting different swap-a-block patterns, or for charity blocks. It is ideal where each member can choose their favorite pattern in a block size that others can use as well.Buy this book and you will have YEARS of joy from all the possibilities.

awesome book for the quilter looking for just oodles of block patterns and sizes.
I just love these books by Judy Hopkins! ( I own both that have the rotary cut blocks, and decided to forego the one with templates). The books offer you MANY different blocks in MANY different sizes ( note that not all blocks will end up matching in size so you will have to pay attention if you want to use a combination of blocks to make a quilt!). The instructions are very simple and concise. A brand new quilter might find that a bit challenging, because they might be looking for a bit more explanation than you get in the books.I highly recommend this book and the other one in the series!

Great Basic Blocks
I love this book because I don't have to do the figuring! It should be a staple in everyone's quilting library. It does not have patterns for quilts, it has blocks with the piecing sizes already figured. I don't have to try to determine what size does a piece need to be cut in order for my blocks to be uniformly correct, the math is done! Very simple. The book arrived in better than advertised condition.

I bought this book after borrowing the same one from a friend, it is so useful with all the measurements for all sizes of blocks. It is well illustrated and really worth the money. Although it was second hand it was in good condition, and I was really glad I bought it, another book for my collection.
