Q: I am trying to find something to put on the steel work shelves at each end of my bbq grill as they get so hot from the sun to touch. might this work?

It will turn steel black. It sounds to me like your expectation is that this paint will reduce temperatures or something? That is not the case. It is simply paint that can withstand high temperatures.

Q: Can this be used to spray a gun barrel that gets too hot?

I would say probably, I do not know how well it will adhere.
