Could I build a frame around these chimes rather than hanging from centre? I have seen other similar setups, or is this one too large?

We can't recommend this due to potential damage it may cause, but it sounds like a possible way to mount the chimes. Check out our Tre9t model (Table Top Chime) and see if that is similar to what you want.

Is it possible to mount the wind chimes from a cymbal stand and do I need to purchase any attachment to do this?

Yes, you can attach the wind chimes from a cymbal stand. My daughter actually has them mounted with a "tree works" attachment bracket" under her ride cymbal. Because she is limited in hardware, we bought the attachment instead of purchasing another boom stand specifically for the chimes. The attachment is sturdy and fits the chimes perfectly.

Any recommendation on a stand to hang it on?

What is the circular black thing in the second picture?

It's the mailing tube that the chimes come in. Seems like a funny way to package them, but the tube is very thick and rigid and they came undamaged attached firmly to the wood mounting piece. If you order the mounting bracket and holder, it comes separately in another box.
