Solid, Affordable Utility Carrier
Solid Utility Carrier. Directions are not really clear but this is easy to assemble. -10 minutes and the 2” hitch fits the receiver. I tested the bar first based on past reviews. Installed onto truck in -28F. Easy. I live in rural Alaska and this was $61.00 vs $148.00 in stores. I’ll use it to haul 5 Gallon fuel cans which I don’t want inside the truck bed. My exhaust is off to the side. It’s important to avoid this product for fuel if your exhaust points at the carrier.

Sturdy, Well Built, Great Value,
I bought this right before a multi-day family ski trip during a brutal Sierra winter storm. It performed perfectly, and with the addition of a cargo bag we were able to carry 2 large plastic bins full of equipment and supplies for the week; bins that we had no room for in the already packed SUV. I had no problems with assembling it, but found that an extra pair of hands for inserting the top brace bolts was useful. It's not, as some say, that the holes don't line up properly; it's that for the two sides to end up straight, stiff, and taught, it requires tension on the top braces. My wife easily helped out with that step in just a couple of minutes, but I could have also managed it myself. Just follow the rule that applies to any assembly like this; don't tighten anything till all fasteners are started. The end result is a rack that feels like it's welded together........very solid. I added a HiTow dual hitch extension which raised the carrier up and away from the exhausts, and up to a more ergonomic height for loading & unloading. I'll use that this summer for carrying a bike rack and trailer at the same time, so it was well worth the $29 extra. I completed the setup with a Marksign 48" x 19" x 20" hitch carrier cargo bag for $39, and couldn't be happier with the compatibility and performance of the setup. Through 6 hours of rain and then freezing blizzard that shut down all roads to Tahoe right after we got through, my stuff arrived perfectly safe and dry. Oh, and I didn't miss climbing up to pack and unpack the cartop carrier, not to mention mounting and un-mounting the cartop carrier. This is so much easier! It's also easier to store. Love it! Oh, it did have a couple of small spots that the paint was damaged from want of better packing materials. But I'm still feeling 5 star happy with this purchase based on perfect functionality and great value.

Amazing durability! I would definitely buy again, but I'm positive that I'll never need to!
I've been using a roof mounted luggage rack the past few trips we've taken and for freeing up storage inside the vehicle, it was great. However, the hit to my gas mileage was very noticeable (avg. 30 mpg without, 20 mpg with). So after reading quite a few reviews, I decided to give a hitch mounted cargo carrier a try. The MaxxHaul was one of the more reasonably priced carriers with a decent weight rating. I was specifically looking for one that had the raised frame so that luggage was less likely to slide around, or fall off the rack. It comes in a decent sized box, and there are about 7 pieces in total that you have to assemble (might be a few more if you count the support bars as extra pieces). Assembly is pretty simple. Line up the main bar in the center and the right/left cages on either side. Run the bolts through to the center piece and tighten them down by hand so everything stays together. Add the support pieces to hold the left and right sides together at the top and then tighten all the bolts down. Finally, add the two reflectors and you are ready to roll. On a side note, make sure you put the metal where the reflectors mount, towards the back. I wasn't paying attention the first time and mounted them backwards. Took about 5 minutes to unscrew the nuts and bolts to fix, but simpler to avoid doing it wrong to begin with! The size is excellent. I can fit a full sized Igloo cooler as well as a large suitcase beside each other lengthwise. In the attached picture, under the tarp (in case it rains), the cooler is on the left, the suitcase is laying flat on it's back on the right and I have a lawn cultivator behind the cooler and coming across the top of the suitcase, which is the bulge hanging off the right. Next time we travel, we'll be packing a few more suitcases, so I'll put them on their sides so I can fit at least 2 in the carrier (maybe all 3, I haven't measured yet) and then one on top of the others. The carrier has a little weight to it, but it's still light enough that you can easily carry it or lift it up to the top shelf for storing when not in use. To test the durability, I installed it in the hitch of my vehicle, stepped up on it and then took a couple good jumps. I'm a pretty good sized guy (won't share my exact weight on here, but let's just say it's enough that I'm on a regular diet), but the carrier felt extremely sturdy. I was actually more worried I was going to damage my vehicle than the carrier. When the carrier is first installed, without any luggage to add weight, it rattles around a bit. I was a little concerned that this would happen while I was driving and create a lot of road noise. I had looked at ordering a stabilizer, but it wouldn't have been delivered in time for the trip, so I decided to go without and see what happened. I'm happy to report that by just adding a single, fully packed suitcase, it puts enough weight on the hitch so that it doesn't create any noise or rattling while driving. The only reason that I knocked a single star off is because the power coating wasn't done very well. I had 2 different spots that were not well covered and had a slight hint of rust starting to develop. It was easy to do some light sanding to remove the rust and then I used a metal spray paint to cover those spots without any issues, but would have liked to have seen a nice, even powder coat over the whole carrier right when I took it out of the box initially. Overall, this is a fantastic carrier and has exceeded my expectations in terms of durability. My gas mileage on my last trip averaged just shy of 29 mpg, so very little loss since there is no direct wind drag being mounted on the back. If you are looking for a hitch mounted carrier, I would definitely recommend this one, you just might need to do a little touch up painting if yours was like mine.

Wish I'd purchased one years ago.
Purchased the MacciHaul Receiver Mount Cargo Carrier to get hay without having to put it inside my SUV. It handles two 80lb bales of hay stacked effortlessly. be careful if you're using ratcheting tie downs so you don't tweak the basket out of shape, but it never seemed unstable or like it was struggling. Installation tip: Assembly is easy, just five pieces geld together with weight high quality bolts, took about 15 minutes. but look closely at your vehicle's receiver and the relative location of the exhaust. If the exhaust is in line with the 2" receiver hole you will need an adapter or riser to make sure your cargo doesn't sit against the tailpipes and get melted or catch fire from the exhaust.

Product works awesome with the following configuration.
I used the MaxxHaul 70209 carrier bag with the MaxxHaul 70107 Hitch Mount Compact Cargo Carrier - 53" x 19-1/2" (Perfect fit); I also used the Cocoweb Chrome C-Lock Heavy Duty Locking 5/8" Inch Hitch Pin with Weather Guard Protection(A little extra cost but 2 of them means you don't come back and find your cargo carrier gone after a restful night in a hotel far from home); a Reese hitch extender/lift and two stabilizers(one on the hitch extender and one on the cargo carrier hitch attachment. I used the Winnerwell Anti Rattle Hitch Tightener for 1.25" and 2" Hitches on the extender and the Towever 84701 Super Corrosion Resistant Trailer Hitchs Tightener Stabilizer Cross Clamp No Wobble on the cargo carrier.) Stabilizers are pretty much essential on a cargo carrier. I had 7 different hotel rooms stays over the course of the trip. Didn't want to deal with the deafening wind noise from car topping the carrier bag and it's my understanding that the wind resistance also decreased the overall miles per gallon. (I'm all about comfort and cost savings if I can find the right nexus of them together.) Traveled well over 3000 miles across the country to Yellowstone in the middle of August. Encountered light Rain in Denver for about 45 mins and heavy rain in Oklahoma for about an hour. (The bag had a little water and dirt residue on top from the road, car and rain but everything inside remained completely dry.) Unpacked and repacked each hotel stay 4 medium suitcases, 2 sleeping bags 3 pillows (Heaviest/widest bags to the bottom laying flat provides more stability and stacking two by two suitcases laying flat helps the shaping of the carrier bag.) Straps included are plenty long. Once top ones are connected to the bag they don't need to be taken out. Easy adjustment between top and bottom by lifting buckle. Easy removal from carrier by lifting buckle so feeder cable slides through. Lift zip flap, unzip and lay cover back. No need for an additional ratchet strap or anything. The extender with lift allows the carrier bag to not be exposed to your exhaust tubes and also allows you to lift your rear door if using with a SUV hitch. I found it easier and more attractive to simply have the bag face the vehicle. The blank black side then faces rearward so you're not a traveling advertisement for MaxxHaul.(Though I like their product I simply do not like being a walking/driving billboard). The zipper opens facing the vehicle rather than the rear but with the cargo carrier on the extender hitch you have enough room to sit in your SUV and peak into bag/bags without everyone behind you seeing what you are looking for. (Not being weird but if I'm looking for my charging cable in my suitcase really quickly I don't want everyone seeing all my colored undies :-)) There is one thing I had to work on and a suggestion I would make to the manufacturer to make their product pretty nigh perfect. Once cinched down tight the straps tend to trail too long to the ground. Top and bottom buckle are related as far as strap length but even the best placement still meant some straps trailed. I folded them up and tied them back onto the strap using some rubber covered bending wire but some simple velcro straps at the end can easily solve this issue. This kept them snug while on the move and prevented strap flapping in the wind. Great overall set of products that helped make the trip more enjoyable by allowing the kids to stretch their legs a bit more in the cabin and reduce incidents between younger siblings.

It held up very, very well!!
I originally planned to purchase another carrier that cost $159.00, but I waited a bit too long, and the delivery date happened to be the day we were to leave on vacation (and this is why I purchased this item, to give me extra space). Lo and behold I even had enough to buy a waterproof bag to place my luggage inside of! All for less than the $159.00 I was originally going to spend. Putting it together took a bit of ingenuity, which my 6 year old has plenty of. The pre drilled holes didn't quite line up, but as my little genius showed me, was to align them by folding upwards the bracket that holds the 2 platform pieces together, insert the screws, then apply some pressure push them down and voila! Tighten them down, proceed to assemble the rest of the apparatus and tighten down all the nuts and bolts. DO NOT tighten down the nuts and bolts as you go along. Do this once everything is put together. I manufactured an extra metal piece for the anti- rattle /stabilizer (the piece on the right), just for some added piece of mind. We loaded about ( and I'm guessing...) 150 - 200 lbs. on the platform all in the waterproof bag, and secured it all by tying it down with some rope, both crossways as well as lengthwise. I was super tired when we got back home, and my wife had already taken all the luggage off the platform by the time I woke up. This carrier held up very well, and is sturdy as the dickens.. I had doubts before I purchased it, because of the price, but this goes to show you all that, price does not mean anything, although, for some things it might. I give item this 5 stars all around. And for reference, we traveled from farwest Texas and traveled to California and returned via Las Vegas, Nevada! All with nary a problem!

Good but not great
It is rated for up to 500lbs, however, we had less than 200 on our 14 hour road trip, and it slightly bent at the center. Possibly because it is held by nuts and bolts; it is not a one piece. It still feels solid, but I won’t load it with more than 150 lbs. the paint already peeled in a couple areas.

The package arrived damaged and broker, the plastic bag with the fixings too, at the end some nuts and washer are missing, I need to solve the issue. Additionally, it has scratches in the corners, looks like the basket was returned.

Very good quality and dimensions are good enough to carry considerable stuff. Easy to assemble with the instruction manual.Did it in 15 mins. Also got the clamp that helps secure and avoid rattling. This bracket is at an add aed 31/- but good to have. Priced competitive!Delivery was quick. Also comes with 2 reflectors that are fixed on the rear for visibility at night. Very happy with the product, installed for my Pajero, looks cool. Recommend this seller.
