Good clean fun!
I read/played this casually about twenty years ago, and still remembered details as an adult. The basic idea is that you are one of six contestants trying to get through a dungeon of ...um...deadly traps. Yeah, I guess that's obvious from the title. But what's cool is that you were not captured, or sentenced to this dungeon or something like that - you actively went in of your own volition. The game plays well - not too easy, and not too challenging - and the story is cool. If you play right, you can meet all five of your fellow contestants. Some you just find dead, others fight you, and some even become your allies. Enjoy this!

Good book, shame about the quality.
The book itself was excellent. The quality of the second-hand book was poorer than described, though, with considerably more wear to the cover and spine than I expected. Still readable, but slightly disappointing (five stars anyway for the book).

book game
I had this book when I was little. I loved it so much that I bought it for my nephew when he turned 11. All you need is paper, pencil and 1 die. It's a strategic game that you play by yourself combined with a choose your own adventure book. I loved it. The challenges can be different each time depending on your dice rolls. It's something that travels well and will keep your kid busy and interested forever!

Masochistic Choose-Your-Own Adventure
Hey, it was a good idea: instant one-player RPG campaign, just add dice! But man, is the execution terrible. Instead of giving you multiple ways to beat the silly thing, they created one "true path" and stuck a bunch of cruel dead ends on it. And even if you hit upon the correct route early on, random die rolls (the combat system has absolutely no strategy to it) stand a good chance of killing you off. Seriously, if you play this thing honestly, starting over when you get killed like they say to, subtracting the proper amounting of HP when you get smacked, it will take you about 25 tries to get through.A damnably lazy execution of a good idea with nice illustrations.

Great Fun but Let Down in a Few Areas
So this is my third reading as an adult of these books and I have to say I'm still having loads of fun. I suspect most of my enjoyment comes from the effect of nostalgia - I not only remember holing up in a corner of the school library between classes when it was raining outside, my clothes steaming, trying to hide food from the librarian, but it also brings back memories of the many days and nights playing AD&D with my friends.Deathtrap Dungeon is reasonably well-written for its genre and interesting to play (or read?). It IS reasonably frustrating - many of the death traps just come out of nowhere and there is no way in advance to avoid them. The author gets away with this because of the premise of the story; the dungeon was specifically designed to kill people attempting to win the grand prize. In that light, the reader can forgive him a bit of torture... and then cheat a little (by backtracking after dying instead of starting over). I think I died about 15 times before managing to finish the book, and it took me 4 run-throughs. (I honestly think that's too much.)One particular flaw in this edition is that Wizard books didn't reprint the whole thing. They copied the instructions from the first book, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, but in the original editions the instructions changed from the first to the subsequent books. They are supposed to allow you to eat provisions whenever you like. Instead, they say you must wait for specific directions from the text - which never comes! On my first run-through, I kept waiting and eventually died from lack of Stamina! Annoying!Nevertheless, still loads of fun. If you have fond memories of this from your youth (or you are a youth) and you like fantasy/RPGs, you'll enjoy yourself. What more could you ask?

One of the best!
Coming back to Deathtrap Dungeon is a real pleasure, though not one that I could beat this time as I was sad to find that I couldn't remember the correct route! I was nearly there, despite falling down a hole and being eaten by a giant rock grub along the way, but in the final analysis I had somehow missed finding a diamond and so was defeated by the dungeon once again. Hard but not impossible, this is really the classic fighting fantasy dungeon crawl and one of the highlights of the series.

So much fun!
In terms of delivery and packaging, it was quick and well packaged. The book itself was a bit battered but that was expected as it was noted that it was well used.I had a few of these books when I was a kid so had to get it for nostalgia's sake. Its so much fun! My partner and I play together, taking turns to be the protagonist and the narrator, we've played 4 times and are still exploring new paths through! We have yet to reach the end. We're having a blast with it, drawing maps and battling monsters, it's a great time sink for the long winter nights! I'll be looking to get more in the series if we ever get out of Deathtrap Dungeon alive!

A good way to encourage reading
Having enjoyed these books immensely when I was a child, I bought this for my nine-year old son who, although he reads quite well, never seems to do so of his own accord. If you're unfamiliar with the format, the book consists of 400 numbered paragraphs which give you choices of actions - you are directed to different paragraphs according to your choices. Your character has numerical 'Strength', 'Skill' and 'Luck' values that are determined at the start of the game with a dice, and change according to events as the adventure unfolds. The reader uses the dice to determine battles with monsters, and other delights. Some the books in the series have really boring and frustrating labyrinth sections where you just wander round in circles trying to get out - thankfully this one doesn't. It can be over very quickly if you take the short route out, but it's a fun introduction to the concept. If only they did a Pokemon version - my son would never put it down!
