The lamp plugs in using a USB port. It does not charge the lamp. The lamp must be plugged into a USB port to operate. I hope this helps.

What size batteries does it take? descriptions say aa and aaa.

It takes 4 AA batteries. I use the USB connection and its really bright. I really like mine.

Ok I did put batteries in. I would not bother. The battery energy needed to keep the light on is easily exhausted. Get a cube and plug it in. The light is bright and great to read by.
