This is a very useful book for those wanting to teach children chess
This is a very useful book for those wanting to teach children chess. I have bought a copy for each of my two grandchildren. The book includes many small games, activities, which teach how chess pieces move. For example they can play 4 pawns against 4 pawns; you win if you capture all your opponent's pawns or get one of yours across first. Explanations are clear and useful. Accompanying illustrations are also helpful also. It is one of thee best chess books for children I have seen.

Fun and thorough, with a lot of things to try
The author is a longtime chess educator for children and teens. She strikes an upbeat, fun tone that also speaks with authority -- something that'll engage your smaller child, and won't patronize an older kid. The book generally emphasizes fun and real but healthy competition, as well as (since it is chess) concentration and self-discipline.I was pleased how much content there is. It's about 125 mostly-full pages, about half illustrations and half text, comprising 35 bite-sized activities. It'll keep your kid busy for a long time.As for the content, it starts out with a short section on the basic terminology, notation, and rules. Kids can study up on that stuff to start, and also just refer back to it as they play -- it's easy to do. And they get to have fun and play right away! That's because as they are learning the basic concepts and strategies, they are always doing it with these fun, bite-sized chessboard activities. Then, as the book says, by the time they reach the last exercise, they may be a threat to beat Mom and Dad!

Easy to understand; games to play with chess pieces
It explains, illustrates and shows the basic chess moves. Good illustration is included with the written instructions, which were clear and simple to understand. Beginners are encouraged to learn the games involving each piece of the game, to give them a better understanding of what each piece can do. Great book for beginners at chess!
