One of Us Is Lying

This book was chosen as our book club's BOTM for July. Its been a long time since I’ve read a murder mystery/thriller book and this one was really good. So, this is how it goes; five students walk into a detention room and only four come out. Student no 1. Nate Macauley; he is a criminal drug dealer. At the moment he is on probation for drug dealing. Student no 2. Bronwyn Rojas; she is a Yale aspirant, a mathlete. So far she has never broken a single rule, that we know of Student no 3. Adelaide (Addy) Prentiss; the Miss popular, Prom Queen. Almost every girl in the school wants to be her. Student no 4. Cooper Clay; the jock with a promising future in baseball. He is already being scouted for top college teams. And Student no 5. Simon Kelleher; he is the owner and creator of a gossip app called About That. He is a person you do not want to mess with, because he collects secrets, knows all the secrets about every single student in Bayview High school and then he posts them on his app for everyone to see, but guess what, he doesn't walk out of the room. Simon's death puts the spotlight on Addy, Bronwyn, Copper and Nate- The Bayview Four. The police investigate each and every one of them. They all doubt each other. Throughout the course of the book they go from- "one of us is lying" to "we were all framed". Simon’s app had disrupted many lives in the Bayview High school. Out of the Four only Nate had been featured on the app before. However, the other three were next in line. Simon’s death had kind of delayed those secrets from coming out, at the end of the day they did come out and a lot of things rapidly changed after that. I did not expect this book to be this good. The shocks and twists were astounding. I just couldn't put this book down, it was so addictive and I have no nails to bite anymore. The pace of the book was fast yet it was so smooth, it just glided over. It was so easy to read and get lost in it. The mystery of the murder was definitely intriguing. It was complex, the intricate details spread out perfectly through the book; they definitely packed a good punch. I don’t think I can choose between the four. All of their characters are so beautifully written. Addy had the best character development in the book and I love her more than ever. Nate and Bronwyn growing and bonding together was something unexpected and sweet. Cooper, he’s so strong and brave; he has my heart. The friendship and acceptance that formed between the four was something worth reading about. Oh and Simon, how could I forget. Even though he was only there for a few pages; the ruckus he created was mind blowing. The ending, my god, wow. That was something.

Five students find themselves in detention at Bayview High. One student falls dead and the other students become suspects. The story starts unravelling with the reader getting to know more about each character. Every one of the students has a secret to hide which makes them all suspects. Each character is well written and is unique. The back stories of the characters are well explained. The final twist though lacks a thrill, is explained logically. The book is written with enough twists to keep the reader from getting bored. I liked the narration which kept throwing suspicion on all the characters. The chemistry between Nate and Bronwyn was so good. The character development of the princess girl was awesome. She transformed from a self-conscious clingy girlfriend to a badass and confident teenager who needs nobody but herself. The arc of her relationship with her sister is also well written and lovely to read. I would definitely be picking up the next book in this series and highly recommend this book to fans of closed room mysteries and whodunnits with an interesting bunch of teenagers. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced young adult thriller.

The book was my first read in 17 yrs, on which i won't be graded. So I don't know where my standards like but it's a really nice book. The plot, storyline is very interesting and so are the characters. It keeps you hooked, I finished it in less than a day. It has 30 chapters and an epilogue written in about the later end of 300 going on 400 pages, they're written interchangeably from the perspective of each of the 4 living characters, Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, and Cooper. But it's sorted out in headings with a timestamp so it's not confusing at all. It even has a perfect ending. I definitely recommend it, if it's your first book also or another one in many.

Print quality is good but the paper and the cover of the book is not that good in fact a paper quality is very poor and the delivery came without any proper packing the book is not straight it looks bend... It would have been a lot better if the book came with some proper packing. The paper qualities just awful.

This book is amazing! I didn’t get bored even once. It’s just I expected the ending a little/truth of Simon’s murder to be little bit different. But it’s totally fine. The author did a great job! Must read for someone who likes murder mystery 💗

It started off as an easy breezy high school stuff and ended up in a whodunnit. The plot did drag out for a while but once the pace picked up it was unputdownable and that was not the end I expected! It’s a good read, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone picks it up for a limited series or movie.

Perfect love the book

This is my 2nd book by Kare. McManus. I have enjoyed both books. They are obviously young adult. That is not a negative of you want a fun twisty who-done-it. I recommend this for adult and teens alike.

Set in high school with a heavily clichéd outline of a plot and much of the answer can be guessed early on. But... I loved the characters and cared about the outcome, and Karen has something to say about life on the Internet too. Also the character arc where she comes out of a toxic relationship is a lovely, refreshing read. I loved it, I think it lives up to the hype.

It was a fun read

Absolutely superb. This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. Five kids enter detention and only four walk back out... and one of them is lying. This is a who-dun-it with a touch of romance, and even though you don’t know who to trust as secret after secret comes out, I was fascinated by the characters and sat up late to keep turning the pages to finally find out the truth. A fantastic story, highly recommend.
