Velleman HPS140I Handheld Pocket Scope, 40 MS/s, Probe Included

I purchased this primarily, so that I could do a quick check on RS-232 serial Com port signals. We build and maintain several different devices that utilize up to eight serial ports for communication between different hardware devices. This 140i is just so handy. I have a bench oscilloscope that can be painful to use when bench space is limited. The Velleman is a good troubleshooting aid, I would not use it for any critical time or voltage measurement. I verified my source voltage with a calibrated DVM and got the following test results, expressed as DVM voltage/140i measured voltage; .392/.384, .933/.955, 3.215/3.270, 4.97/4.83, 8.98/9.00, 11.88/11.87. Plenty good enough for verifying power supply operation. The battery pack is a 800 mAh ni-mh aaa arrangement similar to what many cordless phones use. The plastic case has a real cheap feel to it but the rubberized protective sleeve mostly covers that up and gives it a rugged personality. The LED back-light is plenty bright enough and the 'auto set' function seems to work well for what I need it for. The menu and controls can be figured out in a few minutes of playing with it. The actual instruction part of the manual is four, 4 x 6 inch pages which seems to be enough. I have uploaded some images into the 'view and share related images' area above. One interesting one is this Vellman HPS 140i next to an iPhone 4s. This thing is small enough to be very handy. The battery charger is apparently not a smart charger so that you may not want to leave this plugged in for more than 10 or 12 hours. The manual makes no mention of this, I am guessing that the charging current is low enough to not over charge and harm the battery. They do mention it could take 7 hours to fully charge a fully depleted (800 mAh) battery. Why 5 stars? Bang for the buck and useability. This scope has both. I purchased this one for my personal use but have already had several co-workers ask where I bought it and for what price. I would guess the company might purchase one or two of these for general shop use. That is my endorsement. ;)

This does a lot for the money. My complaints are that the display is SMALL, it resets to automatic setting each time you turn it off,the scaling takes big jumps so you find you self with a signal in between settings a lot.... and there were almost no instructions packed with it. You have to go to a website. I can't quite see how to get it operating in AC mode to filter out a DC bias( which is probably on the website someplace) but it does do a lot for the price. Its really unfair to compare it to a $1000-$3000 piece of equipment though. If you keep this in mind you can live with the shortcomings. The small display was no surprise as its shown on the picture accurately and it is leaps and bounds above what a DMM or a peak reading DMM ( which have very low sampling rates) can do AND for a lot less money. No its not as powerful or readable as a full-on scope but it also is pocket sized and charges from a laptop USB port. I am evaluating this for use by field technicians who have limited space and weight availability when traveling. This should do the job for looking at signals and getting peak to peak reading with a fast (o-scope fast) sampling rate. It comes with a decent probe and tip accessories. I paid more for a replacement probe on a fluke scope than I paid for this mini scope and probe. Everything seems rugged and after a few weeks of dragging it around machinery, throwing it on my desk and sitting on it once... It still works great. I still reach for a full sized scope for looking close at a signal because I have one, but this thing is great for finding if there is even a signal I need to investigate and if you squint a bit you can pretty much see what you need to to troubleshoot something or test sensor behaviors. Plus if you have a big scope already, this somewhat solves the problem of needing a 200ft lead to look at the other end of the signal if you park a helper at the other end with this one as well and yell. This is a big step up from a bar graph or peak reading DMM and is VERY portable. The battery seems to last forever with intermittent use. And there is a freeze capture of the screen but you can't download it. Again.... consider the cost and size. Overall.... good!

I needed a small portable oscilloscope, and settled on this one. Unit arrived as advertised within a few days. It's easy to set up and easy to use once you locate the more substantial owners manual online. This manual gives your some basic ideas of how to test various parameters, and is very handy. I printed it out to keep with the scope. The included probe works well. Depending on your needs, you may want to purchase some other test probe/leads, but the scope is totally usable with the probe included. I'm using this mostly with audio frequencies.

Well, I used this little Oscilloscope one time. The black plastic case is about 1/2 as thick as other Oscilloscopes, same type on the market. Also, the display is way too small for me to read the voltage at the bottom of the screen. All I could see was a quick wave form to inform me that my fuel injectors and ignition coil are both working properly. So, to be honest I am returning this little handheld Oscilloscope, for a much bigger screen, so I can read the voltage at the bottom of the screen better. This worked. That I can say. I am now 64 and need bigger screens, weather test equipment or telephone mobile. And of course it all happens here at Amazon where you always get a good deal for your money. I shop Amazon often enough to get what products and items I really need.

Just got this today and so far I love it. There are a number of variants of a very tiny, slightly cheaper pocket oscilloscope, and they seem sketchy at best and by all accounts the user interface is terrible. The user interface on this is great, despite only have four buttons, and it feels fairly rugged, too. Does exactly what it claims to do, as far as I can tell. Very happy with my purchase.

Nice litte chap. A decent upgrade on the HPS10 I used to have, I like the rechargable battery and the sample rate is good enough to make it useful. The only complaint is around the battery. This scope has a hardware on/off switch so why the battery runs down when it's left in a drawer for a couple of weeks is a mystery. Also there is no battery level meter so you don't know when it's about to fall over. Other than that - spot on.

Cet oscilloscope représente une bonne surprise. Compte tenu de son prix je m'attendais à quelque chose de moins sérieux.L'utilisation en est aisée et la prise en main rapide. Il a été livrés en une semaine environ.
