Buy The Exoplanet Handbook on desertcart.com ✓ FREE SHIPPING on qualified orders Review: The Exoplanet Handbook (Second Edition) - An EXCELLENT Purchase! - As a member of the ground-based photometry follow-up networks for KELT, Kepler K2 and TESS, I enthusiastically recommend this book. I purchased it as soon as it became available, having found the first edition very useful in my work. In the new edition, Michael Perryman has comprehensively updated the explosive growth in exoplanet science since 2011 (the publication date for the first edition). His research of each topic is full and complete. The written exposition is both lucid and concise; at the same time, it goes into substantial depth, so that the important details and nuances of each topic that are important to researchers in the field are covered. I found his treatment of the topic of Transits to be particularly useful to me, as it reflects the immense growth of data and findings resulting from the Kepler, Kepler K2 and ground-based survey efforts. It also sets the stage for the anticipated deluge of information to be harvested from the recently-implemented TESS mission, as well as the near-term CHEOPS, JWST, PLATO, WFIRST missions and the ground-based very large telescopes that hopefully will be operational within the next decade. The Exoplanet Handbook is my "go-to" reference work for exoplanet research. It is on the most readily accessible bookshelf in my office, and I find myself referring to it for in-depth treatment of a concept about half a dozen times per week. I strongly recommend it for professional astronomers and space scientists working in the field, as well as for advanced amateur astronomers seeking more in-depth knowledge on all topics in exoplanet science. And if I were seeking a textbook for a graduate or advanced undergraduate course on the topic, this would be the first choice. Review: Post-Kepler update doubled in size - We used the first edition in my undergraduate coursework but it was written before Kepler's game-changing discoveries. This edition is easily twice the size and covers so much more. It's written like a real textbook, not a bunch of papers stapled together. I prefer the cohesiveness of a textbook like this.

Both concise and thorough
I have been using Micheal's Exoplanet Handbook as an extremely useful reference book since the first edition was released. I have also used it as a textbook for both upper division and graduate level exoplanet classes. Something I always appreciated with the first edition is that it was written in a self-consistent style, and in a logical order that I essentially follow in my classes. Maintaining a textbook on the topic of exoplanets is non-trivial since the progress is so rapid. However, with the second edition, Michael has built upon the previous version in spectacular ways. Not only has the book been brought up to date to include results from various ground and based-based observations, most particularly Kepler, but the book has doubled in size with many new topics and an exhaustive list of references. In my opinion, this is the best technical exoplanet book currently available. I highly recommend it!

A comprehensive reference on exoplanet research, updated for Kepler
This book is an excellent reference for anyone currently working in the field exoplanets, and I highly recommend it. The nearly 1000 pages in the book provide a comprehensive review of essentially every topic that has ever been published on in the field, ranging from niche topics like searching for exoplanet radio emission to heavily studied subjects like Kepler's yield of transiting planets. The book provides references to many of the published papers in the field, putting each paper into the context of the broader field. This is my goto handbook for providing an initial reconnaissance of the available literature on any exoplanet topic. The second edition nearly doubles the size of the book compared to the first edition published in 2010, including a vast new section on transits and Kepler.

Important notice: this negative score is for the vendor (Amazon eu s.a.r.l.), not for the the book itself, which I have not read yet. Book sold as "New", but it is not a new book. Slight damage in front cover inner binding, and all the corners of the front cover show clear signs of damage, and that not being an old book, it's a 2019 book. No major problems, indeed, but an "Used - Good" label would have been more appropriate. I will probably have bought it anyway, but I prefer a more sincere description of the book. This is the third time I have had this problem in a short period of time, so I will now look for another different book provider, if possible.

This book may seem expensive at first. But it is packed with stats, graphs, information far beyond just to be a gimmick. It maybe a bit to advanced for me to be honest but there is plenty of information to take in that is understandable and relevant

I started working in the area of exoplanet detection and brought this book to extend and refresh my knowledge on the subject. I also wanted a desk reference. This book is perfect. It covers such a wide range of topics.
