Review: simple, effective-- just what you need if your dog pulls on the leash - This short, readable, incredibly helpful book shows humans how to teach their dogs to walk nicely on the leash. Her method is scientifically proven to work, if you stick with the program. Turid Rugaas is humane, kind, and a real friend to dogs. Unlike so many other authors, Rugaas doesn't believe in "leash pops" or similar methods which hurt and frighten dogs. You will feel really good about this gentle, patient, and effective method for training your dog. Rugaas also has a WONDERFUL book and DVD called "Calming Signals", which teaches you to understand dog language. It really helped me understand my shy, traumatized rescue dog. Review: Wonderful, compassionate - I am so so lucky to have found this book! It is a perfect antidote to harsh methods like choke collars, e collars, even the “dominance” methods of so many trainers. The author understands dogs at a much deeper level and helps you guide them using their own language and instincts. It’s a fairly simple method but she’s got the statistics that it has worked on dogs of all ages and types.

Method presented is helping, the book is a simple, quick read.
This is book is short and simple, she does a bit of selling you on her method, perhaps to encourage you to stick to it? I have a two year old rescue mixed breed shepherd/husky/??? with sever anxiety and impulse control challenges; she forgets she's on a leash and goes completely marlin at the sight of a squirrel--it's all at once hilarious and painful and sad--but fish on! Anyway, the methods in this book are helping, we started inside the home and am now able to walk our front sidewalk, not yet around the block. Food rewards are too much for my girl (they way over excite her), verbal and petting rewards are working. I've found that it helps to keep my voice tone rich, low, soothing and my meter slow and to completely turn my back on her when she pulls or lungs.

You can teach an old dog new tricks amazingly quickly with loving kindness
My 8-year old dog Beau (a Border Collie Lab mix rescue) had always been very "high strung" and obsessed with chasing everything that moved. On the first mile or two of our walks and runs, he would rush and pull emphatically on his leash towards all creatures we encountered including other dogs. I tried all kinds of techniques to discourage him from pulling, but nothing seemed to help except lots of exercise. I thought that he was just wired to be super-excitable and unable to "listen", so I just did my best to block him and walk him away from challenges until we had exercised enough for him to be more calm. We recently moved across the country to a new apartment where our only walking options are full of challenges. His pulling got out of hand and I was no longer enjoying our walks much. I went searching for help, and, thankfully, found this book. Within a day of reading it, he was pulling way less. I was so impressed, I bought and read Turid's other book On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals . It has only been a few days since I read these books, but Beau has already become a real gentleman around the geese, ducks, swans, and other dogs we frequently encounter when walking around a lake by the apartment. I can walk him on a slack leash right past the geese and ducks and allow him to calmly greet other dogs or just calmly walk by (even if the other dog is throwing a tantrum and lunging and pulling towards him). These books have made a world of difference in our lives in an astonishingly short time. In these books, the author clearly explains how to communicate gently, lovingly, and effectively with your dog so that you always stay in a totally kind and loving state of mind and never get annoyed or feel any need to "correct" or "discipline". Gently and lovingly giving signals in the dog's own language (and, perhaps even more importantly, listening to the dog and letting the dog know that you are listening) is far more effective and pleasant than any other dog "training" approach I've ever heard about or tried. The technique she describes in this book to stop leash pulling is easy to apply, kind to the dog, and amazingly effective. I have deeply loved dogs all my life and I thought I knew a lot about them, but Turid brought my understanding and compassion to a whole new level. I can't recommend her books enough. For Dog's sake, read them!

The essence of the book is teach your dog in a peaceful kindly way to stop pulling and to start paying attention to where you are headed and come along. One part is to stop when the dog pulls. If pulling just results in you standing still, the dog goes, "Oh, that's pointless," and quits. She also teaches kind sensible respectful ways to teach your dog to notice where you are going and come along willingly, with the aim being without a leash or in high traffic or regulated areas, with a loose leash. The author uses photos and clear interesting stories and descriptions to teach her techniques. A book to keep handy and read again and again. Each re-reading clarifies some nuance or idea that you may have missed on the first reading. The book is brief, but needs no further words. It is so well written that the author draws you along in what she's saying and leaves you eager to read it all again. At the end of the book I had a good grasp of the concept. She gently makes her information so interesting to the reader that you are interested in every word and want to follow along with her, every place she leads. This is what she is teaching us to do for our dogs...to make it fun to explore together and learn a new way of seeing things.

Thanks to this book, we were able to train our dog how to not pull on the leash. Months later, she's (almost) totally chill on walks, with makes the experience MUCH more pleasant for both of us. My only complaint is that the actual technique only takes up 2-3 pages, while the rest of the book is just filler, really. Still, worth it if you're having leash-pulling issues.

This is a very good training book. Not many pages but says it all. Tried the exercises straight away with instant results! The author's opinion regarding equipment to be avoided is eye-opening and her remark that anything at all that is used to cause pain or discomfort to the dog should be avoided. She doesn't comment or discuss e-collars but I expect they could be added to that category. If you've tried everything and your dog still pulls...get this book!

i find all Turid's books to be highly informative, simple and easy to understand and they all make perfect sense. Her dedication to only positive training methods results in happy and well-trained dogs. She has a clear understanding of how the dog's mind works. She not only enables the reader to train thier dog, but explains how and why the dog behaves in the way it does, which gives the reader a better insight into training. She gives the reader simple instructions and a programme to follow to deal with the problem behaviour, as well as enabling the dog to learn a new and positive alternative behaviour. You do not have to be a behaviourist to achieve the desired results. I highly recommend her books as a resource for both trainers and the general public.
