Readiris 16 for Windows is an optical character recognition (OCR) software package that converts an image, a PDF file, or a scanned document into a fully editable text file. Thanks to the power and accuracy of its recognition engine, Readiris 16 for Windows extracts the text from your documents with precision while preserving the layout of the original file. Optical Character Recognition "OCR" is the abbreviation of "Optical Character Recognition", it describes the process whereby an image is captured of a paper document after which the text is "extracted" from that image. Hence, paper documents are converted into editable computer files. And that's precisely what text recognition is all about: entering texts into your computer without retyping them. After all, as efficient as computers are, you have to key in your information first!

Clumsy to save and reopen partial work product
I hoped the program would permit manipulation of an individual file, such as cutting and pasting from another file. It does not. But the big problem is work preservation. If power is lost during scanning, work to that point is lost. Likewise, if work is interrupted and the program needs to be closed, partial work cannot be saved without full conversion. Example: 15 pages of a 2-page run have been scanned. All scanning is lost if power is interrupted, and it is necessary to scan again from the beginning. If it becomes necessary to close the program after scanning 15 pages, the scanned pages will be lost unless the 15 scanned pages are first converted to the desired format, such as a .pdf file. That takes awhile. Then, to resume, it is necessary to import the saved .pdf file, reprocess it, and then continue with scanning the remaining pages. Clumsy. Almost too clumsy to use. ReadIRIS appears to be a clone of Omnipage, or vice-versa. Fortunately, my old XP backup machine still runs Paperport beautifully, which does everything I want done (except that it’s on the XP machine). I am not experienced in using ReadIRIS, so the foregoing may not be accurate.

OCR works - but . . . .
This version of ReadIris does not allow you to scan multiple documents and store the OCR'd results as discrete files. Scan 10 docs and only the last doc will be stored as the OCR'd doc you want. The other 9 have been overwritten.

Junk
This doesn't work at all. It takes forever to install and then it freezes once you select an image or pdf. Junk. By the way, technical support is a joke -- they never get back.
