I also purchased the Spectrum 3rd grade math book. Now, you still have to teach the math but I found out of the two books Sylvan was the best for breaking down how to do the problem. It put math in an easy way for my daughter to understand and eased her into how to solve the problems correctly. She would choose this book over the Spectrum book because it made math interesting and fun. She loved the colorful pictures, and the math games. Some of the math games we still play to keep skills sharp since she liked them so much. You do need scissors, storage bag for game pieces, a ruler, and something to act as a spinner if you don’t have a brad and card stock handy. Spectrum was best for just practice, not teaching- think worksheet. Spectrum is for once the kid has mastery of the topic and not is actively trying to learn. Needless to say, she has the 4th grade book now! Review: Really pleased with this book - LOTS of pages and colorful - As a former high school math teacher, I spend lots of time trying to teach my boy math and I have found this book to be right up our alley. Most pages have only 5 or 6 problems and I think that's about all a kid needs to get their brain going. The problems increase in difficulty from page to page so when it is all said and done I feel like he's really done a lot of thinking. What I really like about this book is that it is 3 books in one. There are basic skills (colorfully presented in a variety of ways), then games and finally real world problems. This allows your child to study every concept a bit and then review them all again in games portion and then apply them in the 3rd "book" within this 1 book. My son is a reluctant student but he hasn't put up much of a fight with this book because it isn't overly laborious and provides colorful variety. Having full color pictures of money, cupcakes, etc... has really made it all seem like stuff he should know so there is very little, if any, arguing about why we have to do math in the summer. We also give him a sticker for each sheet he completes and then as he meets milestones he gets rewards. This book was great for us. I also find that we can breeze through a pages during a meal. I'll show him the pages, he does all the thinking and I write in the answers so he can eat before supper gets cold. Pretty painless for everyone and he's so prepared for 2nd grade that they'll hopefully skip that and let him stick with 3rd or 4th grade content.

Great book and ALL the answers are included
I purchased this book reluctantly after reading the top critical review which says that all the answers are not included. The other reviews were positive enough that I figured I would just do the math to check my daughter's work. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book does indeed have all the answers. The answer keys are in sections throughout the book, rather than all being at the end. Anyway, answer key aside, my daughter enjoys working with this book and I love how comprehensive it is. I was worried that she might be falling behind in math and this book has completely alleviated my concern. We love the cute drawings, which make solving problems fun. My daughter loves that they included games, so she does't feel like she's just doing busy work. Win win! Great book. I would not hesitate recommending this to others and probably will buy again when my little ones are approaching third grade.

It teaches you a lot
My daughter's comment. It helped me to learn a lot but some things that I learn in school are not in the book.

Good for at home review.
My daughter struggles at Math so I thought I’d get this to work on at home with her for some extra help. We do a page or two a night depending on how longs it takes to get through a page. We’ve been working at it about six weeks and I’ve see improvement in her confidence related to math. I really needed some direction because my daughter doesn’t get homework from her teacher. This was perfect. It has bright colorful pages. Topics are divided up into lessons. There are three parts to the book so we do lesson one in each of the three parts to enforce it then move on to the next lesson. It’s been working. I am pleased with my purchase. Much cheaper than hiring a tutor.

Good mix of skills and fun
My 7 year old loves math, so we got him this book to work on over the summer. He was bummed that school was over. He has loved the activities in this book, and hasn't even needed help understanding the math problems. He reads the problems and does it. He sometimes spends hours in his room doing page after page. This book is a great mix of math skills, with enough fun to keep him interested. It is actually 3 books combined into one, and the divisions are clear. The lessons in the first two books seem to go with each other and the third is more like a standalone book. Anyway, the summer is nearly over and he's almost done with the book. Well done sylvan.

Great for reviewing - colorful, simple, straight-forward
I bought this book for my son who recently finished third grade. He had problems with math in 3rd grade so my goal was to have him "catch up" and review those math topics he struggled with. I really like how the topics are laid out and you can easily skip to the topics that you need to review. The pages are colorful and they do a good job of engaging the kids with a variety of games, puzzles, and activities. There are "real life" math problems presented in a fun way. I'm a mom of 4 kids and have reviewed many, many math workbooks designed for review and practice - I think the Sylvan Super Math Success books are the best I've seen.

Blah.
I ordered this book rushing because I took my child out of public school to home school him. This book is just okay in my opinion. I feel it is kid of boring and not challenging. It doesn't have a lot of instructional support. Its pretty much colorful worksheets of "busy" work.

Sylvan books are great!
My son just started using the book for extra practice during the summer break. I need to sit with him while he does it but so far he is enjoying the math lessons. Very happy with the purchase.
