Tasty but pricey once you factor in all the additional ingredients
I received this Indya Spices Coastal Coconut Curry Spice Mix kit and was immediately impressed with the presentation. The spice mixes come in a cardboard sleeve with all of the instructions that you need, on the back of the sleeve to make the coconut curry. At £3.49 for one curry dish, these ‘kits’ certainly aren’t the cheapest - With each kit costing £3.49 for just a sachet of spices, these will work out costly. Remember that this is even before you have purchased the vegetables and other ingredients. Once you’ve factored those into the equation, you’re pretty much going to be looking at takeaway prices. Consequently, these should be viewed as a bit of a treat rather than an everyday evening meal. Evening meals can, and do, work out a lot cheaper than this. As additions, you’re going to need an onion, garlic, oil, chopped tomatoes, coconut milk and meat / or paneer. That is quite a substantial shopping list. Oh - dont forget the accompanying rice as well! Essentially, you just get a sachet of the curry spice for £3.49. All the step-by-step instructions are on the back of the packaging and they are easy to follow. The finished item was very tasty. No complaints there at all. Just be aware of the price and the need to purchase lots of other ingredients.

quick and easy coconut style curry
This Coastal Coconut Curry Spice Mix by Chef Vineet Bhatia MBE is good for us, as my wife really doesn't like anything too spicy and her threshold is VERY low. I’m also Coeliac, so I can’t eat gluten, and I’m also a vegetarian. With this spice blend, you get a chef-created mix of flavourings and spices to make a quick, tasty curry to your liking. You get 50g in a sachet to give the Authentic Michelin Star-worthy blend in your own home. There’s enough to serve four, making it a cost-effective, delicious option for sharing with family and friends, and it comes with an easy-to-follow recipe that is ready in just 20 minutes. There is a QR code on the packet that you can scan for other recipe ideas, but on the two occasions that I tried it, it wasn't working, and I just got errors. For a basic curry, you just need to add onion, garlic, chopped tomatoes, coconut milk and your favourite vegetable and/or protein. You mix the contents of the packet with a small amount of water and just add it to the pan. We did a dish using paneer and added some extra veg, and it was really easy and not overly spicy. However, taste-wise, I found it disappointing. The flavours were pretty uninspiring, and my biggest gripe is that there was just too much thickening agent in it. I presume it's rice flour. The finished texture was a bit shiny and gloopy, which just spoiled it for me. I knocked up a quick sag aloo from scratch to go with it and my wife said that was much nicer, and I’m no Michelin starred chef by any means. Costing just £3.45 at the time of writing, it's a quick and cost-effective route to a meal for 4, but it didn't really float my boat.

Easy to make and very tasty
I've never really tried these kind of "packet mixes" but I'm glad I did because I was surprised at the outcome! The back of the box tells you all the ingredients you'll need to get to complete the meal but there isn't much at all and you will be able to make a very tasty impressive dish even if you are a complete novice. All you need to do is chop an onion and garlic (or just use a paste if you really want to make it super easy). There are very few steps and they are easy to follow too, you simply cannot go wrong. You'll see from my photos that it was quite wet, there is a reason for that - I used less than half the protein so I could turn this into a meal for two but the kit provides for a 3-4 person meal - hence why there is so much liquid. I really like that though and it meant plenty of sauce for the naan to soak up. The flavour has a lot of levels to it. It's light but still retains that earthiness you get with most Indian curries. There is no heat at all so great for those who like the flavour without the burn. There is a hint of lemon that just lifts the dish too which I really liked, giving Thai vibes without the overpowering lemongrass flavour. It's clear the spices used are quality too. All together you could make a meal for 4 for under a tenner which represents great value. Plus I think people would be very impressed especially if you don't cook often.

Excellent
I bought this after trying the korma mix from the same range, which was genuinely excellent, so expectations were fairly high. This one didn’t disappoint. I made a white bean, courgette, tomato and spinach curry (with a bit of added chilli, as I do like some heat), and the result was honestly better than most takeaways—richer, fresher, and far less greasy. The flavour is well balanced: gently spiced, slightly sweet from the coconut, with enough depth to feel like a “proper” curry rather than a shortcut version. It’s also extremely easy to use, which is both a strength and, oddly, a slight drawback. There is a tiny sense of “this feels like cheating” if you’re used to building a curry from scratch—but then again, the end result is so good (and so much quicker) that it’s hard to argue with. I also like that it’s not overly spicy by default, so you can adjust the heat to your own preference rather than being stuck with whatever the mix dictates. Overall, this is one of the better curry spice mixes I’ve tried—reliably delicious, very convenient, and something I’d happily keep in the cupboard for those “want something great but can’t be bothered with 12 spices” evenings.
