Schaum's Outline of Mathematica, 2ed (Schaum's Outlines)

Excellent For Beginners
I was just starting out with Mathematica and was not getting very far with the online videos offered by Wolfram and independents. This is the book that really got me going. There are other books but they are fairly expensive. This book covers all the basics very efficiently. The criticism made by other reviewers that it is out of date is in my opinion overstated. Yes the book was written for Mathematica 7, and Mathematica 10 just came out. Yes there are a few things that work a little differently but 99% of the material is unchangedThis book alone will get you to an intermediate skill level and will suffice for many. However if u want to become a power user you will have to go beyond this book. Nevertheless, for the beginner it is the right starting point.

this is an excellent book. The author covers all the basic topics
this is an excellent book. The author covers all the basic topics. I recommend it for both the beginner and the moderate level user. Someone who is into very advanced Mathematica topics or who is interested in Mathematica 10 may want to get a more advanced text. I purchased two, one for work and another for reading at home. Mathematica was designed to be easy but is really not that easy to learn unfortunately. Matlab seems to be much easier but the symbolic math features are much better with Wolfram Alpha on the web. So overall Mathematica has a few problems but the book does a good job trying sort all of those issues out. I would recommend it to other users.

A Reference, not an Instructional Book
As a reference book for Mathematica, which I've had for a month or so, I found it very good. Unfortunately, it's not an *instructional* book as I'd tacitly but erroneously assumed, and needed. I later learned that for such a book I'd have to pay at least 70-80$. But the examples have been good (those I've encountered so far, anyway … it's slow-going) … good enough to help me teach *myself* Mathematica in my spare time. I'm glad I have it.

Great price. (So great value!). Lots of examples. Great for teaching the basics but poor on programming.
At this price, you can't go wrong. All of the problems have full answers. (This is different from other Schaum's series books I have used where many of the problems only have shortened, "final" answers.) A criticism we can give this book is that it does not go very deep into the most sophisticated and novel aspects of the Mathematica language. Consider the book "Programming with Mathematica, An Introduction" by Paul Wellin, or "Mathematica Cookbook" by Sal Mangano if you are interested in using more of the power of this exceptional software.

A Smooth Reading Technical Book
So far this is the best book I have seen for using Mathemematica. It is much better than I expected it would be given its very reasonable price point. It's not like reading a novel and it's better than reading a dry technical manual. It's a near perfect blend of complete sentences (without undefined jargon) and what is expected from a technical book. I definitely recommend this book for its ease with helping one learn Mathematica.

A very good Intro. Book
I bought this product hoping to get a quick but good introduction about Mathematica. This book has definitely given me that. This book does not cater to advanced level Mathematica programming issues. One of the main reasons why bought this book is to look at many examples on individual topics, and I am certainly not disappointed.I strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in getting a quick but reasonably good intro into Mathematica. Advanced programming and deeper level understanding of Mathematica can be taken up using other specialized books.

Not Just an Outline
This is the getting started manual that every new user of Mathematica should get. I just started out with Mathematica 8, and contrary to some other reviews, this book is still more than useful for getting started with the latest version of Mathematica. Contrary to the title, this book is not an "outline," but a full blown tutorial on what you need to know if you have never used Mathematica before. It is more practical than anything Wolfram offers, and the Kindle edition price makes this purchase a no-brainer.

Helpfull Applications and Examples
This book is very helpfull if you have never used Mathematica. However, it is very disorganized and it does not go into very deep explinations about the program. It uses new commands before it has introduced them, which leads to plenty of confusion. Other than that, it is a good book for all lower level mathemathics courses.

Try something else
I purchased the Kindle copy of this book to give me a quick overview of how to use Mathematica, while I use the trial version of the software prior to deciding whether or not to buy it. I think the book is basically OK, but it misses-out a lot of explanation. It does things without properly explaining why, leaving the reader with a puzzle to work out what on earth the author intends. Most importantly, there are LOTS of typographical errors and funnies. For example, the typeset versions of differential equations come out as being very small on the page- almost unreadable. Some symbols are completely greyed-out as solid blocks and are unreadable. I guess I didn't spend a huge amount on this, as otherwise I'd be asking for a refund. I cannot recommend this as a purchase.

Inexpensive Introduction
This is an introduction to Mathematica. It gives a rather complete introduction into the basics of Mathematica. There are numerous examples and solved exercises. This is a always a good idea for a book which tries to teach something as complicated as Mathematica. The level of explanation is just right for my starting point. But I am an experienced mathematician. I found this compact introduction very helpful. The book suffers from various misprints, even in the examples. Also, the layout of the Kindle edition is chaotic. Moreover, I feel that some basic concepts are not explained with enough details. For starters, things might get confusing. If you want to program Mathematica or really understand its basics, this book is not for you. However, for the price it is a good starting point.

Exactly the source of problems I wanted
This book provides a wealth of good practice problems, to learn how to use Mathematica. I just covered over the solutions and attempted all the problems myself, many times finding alternate or better ones, but always a basic solution was there to examine. The wide range of math topics covered was an excellent review for me as well, and led to several further investigations. One disappointing lack for me, was the absence of a comprehensive unit on pure functions. The author says they are only worthy of a brief mention, but I disagree. Overall however, the book is well worth its modest cost, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a quick familiarity with hundreds of Mathematica functions.

It is excellent. And it was reasonably priced
I wish I had bought this book first. It is excellent. And it was reasonably priced. It is clear. It is the first ebook I bought that all the equations could actually be seen! For $11, it can't be beat. This is the first math program book I could actually lean something! Get the kindle.

Hammer Buch
Hammer Buch! Irrsinnig toll einfach nur. Wenn ich gewusst hätte, dass es dieses Buch gibt, hätte ich mir von der Uni früher Mathematica besorgt. Hätte mir viel Zeit erspart.
