Asterix the Gladiator: Album #4 (Adventures of Asterix)

A prime example of everything that is good about the Asterix books. This fast-paced episode delivers non-stop laughs from the off.Its only as an adult that you get to appreciate fully all the nuance, humour and understatement. Our two Gauls leave the rural warmth of their village to venture into Rome. In the heart of Roman "civilisation" they encounter a host of deceptive and deadly characters, before managing to rescue their bard from being thrown to the Lions. as Obelix says, "these modern cities are all very well, but they're not exactly what I'd call friendly"- and there we have Goscinny's deeper message: for all of Romes civic pride- illustrated in marvelous detail- there is the impersonality and cruelty of humanity's new urban reality.

This is one more adventure of Asterix and Obelix that now go to Rome to rescue their friend Cacofonix, their Gallic village's bard. It's funny, the plot is wisely devised and we learn something of Rome at the time of Julius Caesar, even a bit of Latin expressions. In the paperback version, it's fine to glance over the very well drawn pictures, printed in a nice paper

Asterix and Obelix become gladiators to rescue their village's sour-toned bard, Cacofonix, who has been kidnapped by an ambitious Roman Prefect. Much silliness, cartoon walloping, and terrible puns result. If you like Goscinny and Uderzo's type of humor, then you should be very pleased with "Asterix the Gladiator" -- a very solid entry in the series. These books are fine for adults and for children, if parents don't object to cartoon violence (no killing, of course, but a lot of over-the-top fisticuffs where no one is injured for very long).

My wife grew up reading Asterix and Obelix. These were part of her Christmas gifts. She loves them.

Gave these books to some junior high kids. They not only loved the graphic story, but also enjoyed the sprinkeling of Latin throught. Nearly all continued learning through Latin classes at school. A superior intro to our Mother Tongue as well as a thoroughly interesting comic book series for its own sake.

12-yr old son loves it!

Still holds its appeal. Our kids loved it. Not exactly politically correct, but got far more laugh out loud moments than children's books of the PC era.

I've read Asterix since I was a kid, and my son is just now beginning to read more complicated things. He loves browsing these comics, and it is really helping motivate him to practice his reading.

Can't go wrong with good old Asterix! Bought this book on Amazon Warehouse Deals and had no problems; book was as described.

An old favorite which still holds lots of charm. A throughly enjoyable read for all ages.

I've been a great Asterix fan for nearly 50 years.Sadly, I lost all my original books some years ago so I'm now collecting them again, from book 1.I love the re-coloured versions of the early books as it brings them more into line with the newer ones.Ok - not original, but I prefer the better colouring.Books 1, 2 and 3 have been done brilliantly - this one - not quite so good.It does appear to have been re-coloured in a bit of a rush, and not as neatly, or as sharply as the others.Still a superb book though that I'm pleased to have.Great story too....

Bought this for my dad as he started collecting the Asterix books again (we’d had the full collection years ago), and he absolutely loved it. Perfect quality and a great price.
