Extremely noisy drive that failed after 18 months. I should have stuck with WD.

I'm an IT guy so I'm pretty fussy about the type of equipment I purchase. I have a Synology NAS at home for photos, music, documents, etc. That was my first NAS. A NAS is "Network Attached Storage" but it works like a giant hard drive that both Mac and PC can use. That makes it nice for us because we have quite a few Macs and PCs in the house. I also purchased a Synology Media Server which we use. Both of these devices use SATA drives. I purchased the Ironwolf Pro model because it was supposed to be quieter and more reliable. It's been great on both accounts. However, this year I noticed that my first purchase of this product - some 7 years ago - was starting to degrade. Synology has a setup where it will notify you when it senses degradation. Hard drives do not last forever - particularly when they are spinning all the time. One of the reasons you buy a Synology is so you can put RAID or SHR on it to protect from any data loss. So, even if one of my drives is degrading, I can purchase a new one and replace it with no data loss. So, that's what I'm doing. Sorry for the long explanation but I thought this might help some of you that are considering a NAS or are simply frustrated that you have to buy yet another drive. It's technology and it does wear out. The good news is that the price comes down to. In 7 years, my 10TB drive price is equivalent to a 16TB drive so I can get much more capacity for the same money. That's not a bad thing either.

I bought 2 for my Synology DS920+ in 2020. Both are still going strong in 2025. Highly recommended!
