Hagen Parakeet/Budgie Staple Vme Seed, 3-Pound

I recently bought the Hagen Parakeet/Budgie Staple VME Seed for my birds, and I’ve been really happy with it. This premium blend seems to be well‑balanced and fortified with nutrients, which makes me feel good about feeding it to my budgies. My birds eat it eagerly and seem healthy and active, which is exactly what you want in a staple seed mix. The quality feels good — the seeds look fresh and not dusty or broken up like some other brands I’ve tried my birds really love it. Overall, this seed mix is a solid choice if you’re looking for something nutritious and reliable for your small birds. I’d definitely recommend it

No artificial colors or junk! I looked at a lot of different seed mixes for parakeets. Not the marketing hype, just straight to the ingredients. There are only a few that don’t have artificial colors, soybean and other fillers. This is the only one which is affordable in that bunch. I saw another brand who has organic seeds plus fruits and veggies. I saw that the same first ingredient is included in this seed mix, millet. But the seed is 1/5 the price. I will, of course, have to supplement with other foods like veggies and fruits to make up for the lack of in this mix. But I am very happy that there is only orange oil added with vitamins and nutrients. I don’t think the vitamins and nutrients are actually a benefit, but at least there is no poisonous colors or genetically modified soy or other harmful additives. I am happy with this for my lennie parakeet. And I just got it out of the bag and he went absolutely bonkers for it! I am very satisfied.

I looks for seed mix without corn and soy as the one of the first ingredients. This does not hav ANY soy or corn Also I don’t want funny little pellets colored or otherwise or sugar and artificial colors. Btw, corn is frequently one of the top 3 ingredients if not the number one ingredient. Corn is a cheap, fattening filler which is why they feed it to livestock. To fatten them up and cause them to get big faster. It used to be used in practically all dog kibble but consumers now look for dog food without corn for the same reason This seed does not have any of the above mentioned offending ingredients. It is vacuum sealed, smells fresh when you open it and, best of all (drum roll please) you can sprout it ! The birds love sprouted seed and if seed isn’t fresh, it won’t sprout! Give this a try. Please remember that any change in diet should be made slowly And don’t forget to give fresh veggies too and you will have a happy, healthy budgie

Long story... I was given a parakeet that was very young. He came with the food that people had been feeding him. It included colored morsels and lots of different things in it. I have raised many parakeets in my life. This one wasn't doing well and he was having orange colored watery diarrhea. Diarrhea indicates an unhealthy bird. I'd never had a bird before that had such constant diarrhea. I returned the food to the store and bought different food. Most of the food at the pet store had colored various items in it. The next food also caused an unhealthy reaction. I was fed up. I knew that my birds in the past had always just eaten bird seeds. I looked online to find something else because the pet store did not give me any more options. I found this wonderful parakeet food that states on the package that it's just the seeds that parakeets eat. No brainer. My parakeet only needs to eat the seeds he's supposed to eat not all that extra junk. I emptied his food tray and put the clean seed in. He began to eat it and his diarrhea cleared up immediately. He became much more healthy and happy. I liken it to feeding children sugary cereal with lots of colored dye in it. It's a lot of unnecessary fluff that is not good for them. I'm so happy to be able to reorder this bird seat for my parakeet.

My parakeets seem to like this seed so I have less waste. The only problem I have with this product was the expiration date which is May 2026. Since I didn’t receive it until the end of October 2025, that certainly isn’t a two year guaranteed freshness they talked about. The product has been sitting on the shelf somewhere for over a year and a half. I contacted the manufacturer and they just basically told me they wouldn’t do anything about it because I bought it from Amazon. Amazon won’t do anything about it because it’s a food product and it’s non-returnable. I was truly expecting the manufacturer to stand behind their product. Very disappointing.

I considered buying this seed mix because it has whole seeds, no pellets and no dyes. And on top of it, it’s at a good price. I feed this to my budgies both dry and sprouted and they eat it all!!! It didn’t come with mold, or moths and the bag was not puffed up which are all good signs!! I definitely recommend getting this seed mix instead of other mixes like Wild Harvest, Kaytee, Encore or Higgins. Just remember seeds should NOT be the only thing your budgies or other small birds eat. Like the bag says, feed a variety of leafy greens, herbs and veggies along with seeds so they get their nutrients.

My keets eat it. It does not smell. It doesn't break by a human, but easy for the bird. It appears normal for seed. It's nutritious as a staple.

Good, basic maintenance seed mix for budgies. My birds eat nearly everything in it, so there's very little waste. I have two birds and one bag has lasted over six months, so this size bag may be more suited to a larger flock. I suggest placing the bag in the freezer for a couple of days when you first get it to kill any meal moth eggs that invariably may be lurking in the mix.

Great quality and also great price for the quantity. My birds love this seed mix. Great for their needs. I just add some fresh veggies etc to be well balanced. It also gets shipped to me quickly with no problems. Would definitely recommend!

I wasn't sure which brand of seed to buy for my budgie, but I've always know about the good reputation of Hagen, so I decided to buy this brand when I saw it. I'm certainly glad that I did, because my budgie really seems to love this food, even preferring it over her budgie treats and millet; after reading the back of the bag I am not surprised! This food is full of absolutely everything that wild budgies seek out in the wild, and has the pleasant smell of oranges. My budgie seems happy and looks very healthy too - I am going to go out on a limb, and say that most budgies would enjoy eating this seed mix, and I highly recommend it - my budgie loves the seed, and I love the price and reasonable bag size!
