Mr. Robot: Season 2

Esmail's wild ride
Honestly this is probably one of the best shows on TV right now. Mr. Robot follows the story of Elliot, a cybersecurity expert. Follow Elliot's journey as he finds himself recruited into hacktivist group aimed at taking down the 1% of the 1%. The show is relatively unique in that you, the audience, is acknowledged by the main character. There's a good reason for that though since Elliot suffers from some mental disorders and depression. This results in allowing the show to have some unique interactions with its audience, which in turn, lets watchers of the show feel like a character in the Mr. Robot show-verse. With that said, here's something to keep in mind as you watch the show: Elliot is an extremely unreliable narrator. One of the main attractions of Mr. Robot is it's use of tech. There's no CSI/NCIS "gui interface with virtual basic", "we'll hack faster if we have two people typing on a keyboard", "ENHANCE" cliche here. Instead, you can expect to find relatively accurate terminology, programs, and methodology. Obviously there are occasional instances where something is done not quite exactly as the way it should be done but sacrifices need to be made sometimes for the overall story. However, even with all the praise the show gets for its authentic depiction of hacking and technology, I want to make something clear, hacking is not the main focus of Mr. Robot. This becomes more apparent in Season 2 where hacking takes a backseat and character study becomes its main mission. Whereas Season 1 mainly brings to light the question of privacy and wealth distribution, Season 2 focuses more on character development and philosophy. As a result, some parts of Season 2 have been criticized by fans of Season 1 as "pretentious", "not enough hacking". Some people may even feel as if the show doesn't have a main direction anymore. In my opinion, Mr. Robot is very much still on track and its purpose hasn't changed. The show creator, Sam Esmail, originally planned for Mr. Robot to be a movie. When it became clear that the story of Mr. Robot couldn't sufficiently be told in 2 or 3 hours, it was converted to a tv series with a planned 4 - 5 seasons. If we used the traditional method of story telling with a beginning, middle and end, it's much easier to understand the tone shift from Season 1 to Season 2. Season 1 was just the introduction. Like all introductions, it's used to reel in audiences with an interesting aspect of the show (in this case, authentic hacking) and allows the show runners to introduce the characters . Season 2 is the start of the middle. This is part is all about character development. This is where characters of the story encounter conflict and change as a result of overcoming that conflict. While Season 2 may be a lot slower, I personally find it much better than the first season. I find it interesting how some characters have made a complete 180 from the start of the show. I find it captivating how Elliot struggles to understand his disorders to get a grip on his life. In my opinion, Season 1 was just a great, but rather normal/safe TV show. Season 2, on the other hand, is art. Some will indeed find it pretentious but that's because this season has taken great risks in trying to make a show that is different from most other shows. In a time when we have other great shows such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Fargo, it's a tall order to stand out. While it's a huge task to stand out from the above mentioned shows, I believe Sam Esmail is the guy to do it. Why? Because this season has some of the best visuals and cinematography in the industry. This season is also one of the most detailed ones out there. For example, a reddit user was able to figure out a major plot point in the first episode just by compiling small, brief details in the background or hidden in the dialogue. This is not a media piece like Now You See Me where the creators think themselves as smart just because they throw a sudden unbelievable twist in you face out of nowhere at the end of the journey. There are surprising twists in Mr. Robot but it doesn't come out of nowhere. The clues are all there but you just have to look closely.Sometimes you may wonder where the show is going, but rest assured, the show runners have a clear vision and a clear story that they want to tell. If you watch an episode, you can tell just how much passion and effort the show runners put into Mr. Robot. This is Sam Esmail's wild ride and you know what? I would like very much to continue to enjoying it.

You'll need a Band-aid when you're done reading.
On a whim, never having heard of it previously, I found myself watching Mr. Robot on TV (Amazon Prime free streaming Season 1). I loved it from the beginning. The world of computer hackers is mystical, secretive and interesting to me. I didn't think the show would change my way of thinking and my behaviour the way it has. The thing about this series is that even if you don't like the cast, the director, the story line, or maybe you just don't care less for computers and their capabilities, you still owe it to yourself to watch at least one or two episodes before deciding.. What makes this show addictive for me is the portrayal of raw human emotions which we all find so hard to discuss. I'm not talking about the struggles of the cast, I'm talking about you, me, our neighbors and friends, other humans. Every single one of us has to be more in control, more prepared. Every time I watch an episode my mind goes back to the 2003 Northeast Power blackout. Remember? There was a problem in the electrical grid that took out electricity to the most of the Eastern seaboard, including Canada for 24 hours. In some areas the power wasn't restored for over 3 days. We couldn't buy gas, the computers in the pumps didn't work. Money for lunch? HA! We couldn't use our ATM or credit card for days because the banks computers were down, there was no power at the bank, the grocery store, the hotels, NO WHERE. No money, no lights, no heat, no food, and no bank. One glitch, one unintentional mistake in the system and the domino's started falling. Now banks and large corporations get hit intentionally by hackers trying to take them down, every single day! I remember that hopeless feeling and realising how dependant I was on the system. Mr. Robot is giving me a much better idea of what is and isn't possible in today's world and that's no mistake. Black hat hackers aka "bad people doing bad things with computers" seem to have a lot of time on their hands. The show is an eye opener into that hacker world. The producers keep it true to life even in small details. That computer code you frequently see in the show, is code written to do what the script is saying happens. In other words, it might take 4 days to write that code and it only appears on your screen for seconds. But they know we are paying attention and some people even understand it (not me though). I enjoyed watching the interviews with the cast because they seemed just as suprised as I was at how easy some things are to hack. This show will change how you see society today and more importantly it might even help you correct some small mistakes that make us all so vulnerable. Even if you've never picked up a computer, the government and big business has loaded their computers with all the details of your life. Now, go get a Band-aid or a piece of tape and put it on the front facing camera of your phone, laptop, or computer. Yup. It takes about 1/2 and hour for a hacker to get access to the camera without you even realising it's ON!! During interviews each cast member said that's one of the first things they did after that episode because a hacker showed them just how easy it is. Hey, stop trying to peak over my bad-aid and start changing you're bank passwords lol. Seriously, unless your password has at least 12 digits, a mix of capitol and lower case letters, and two special characters (like a : or / ) you may as well give them a key. Hackers write password hacking programs that include dictionaries too so try not to use full words. See? It's amazing what they can do.

Best show in a long time
Arrived on time and in great condition. Following on the aftermath of events from season 1, 2.0 explores deeper into Elliotts mind as we uncover what plans have been set in motion, why the dark army is involved, what steps the FBI are taking and of course see how ecorp clings on to power. The politics, science, psychology and emotion in this series is outstanding, everything unfolds enough to keep you hooked while still setting up suprises and creating unease. All the characters are imperfect, and those imperfections help make them more believable. By the time you finish you'll question a lot of things in both how people/ businesses manipulate and what happens if these systems theyve placed fail? If you haven't seen season 1 then grab that too.

MINDS, INDEED THE WORLD, TEETERING ON THE BRINK
Cybernetics wizardry, but no people skills - Elliot Alderson is a loner with mind in serious disarray. How much around him is for real or imagined? How can he get rid of the inner demon masquerading as a combination of Mr. Robot and his dead dad? Meanwhile the anarchic Dark Army realize Elliot's skills are essential to help bring down the planet's banking system and destroy those vast global companies securing vast profits by exploiting the masses. As intended, uncomfortable viewing. Topical too, nowadays hackers so often in the news. A central theme seems how much in the world is but an illusion - we in fact knowing little of what is really going on, not even very much about our true selves.Cult viewing. Fans ecstatic. Those less enchanted may feel impact would be greater if more focussed - too often self-indulgence and pretentiousness masquerading as style. (As in Episode 11.)Both addicts and those not so keen are likely to agree the show owes much to Rami Malek's mesmerizing central performance. That battle for control of his mind genuinely disturbs, Christian Slater unnerving as the sinister adversary who may even turn out to be on Elliot's side.Twelve episodes. Disc 4's bonus feature may help to clarify a little. I emerged regretting not having understood more.

Riveting and Surreal
Riveting and surreal, with a couple of mind-bending episodes. This season continues where season one left off, with the country suffering the after-effects of a hack which has more unintended victims than just the intended Evil Corp. The authorities slowly piece together bits of what happened and search for the players. Every bit as good as the first season, and has me looking forward to the next season.

Just as good as season 1!
Mr Robot maintains it high standard in season 2! After the 5/9 attack you see how the FBI are trying to figure out how it all happened. All the main characters acting stays as outstanding as in season 1, and with the new character 'Dom' you see how much she thrives to catch everyone involved ( best character of season 2)
