Pearls Necklace
People at the time of the 1990s Britpop phenomenon seemed to have missed out on this rare gem of a post WIRE and CRASS feminist ladess band, releasing 3 singles on an indie label and feted as the next big thing by some columnists in the NME and Melody Maker at the time the band is now unfortunately just a footnote in the chequered career of famed ligger and groupie Pearl Lowe. However one listen to this collection of gems from their 3 releases suggest that had Ms Lowe decided to employ her talents further in the music industry rather than on a vodka bottle strewn trail to the door of more famous britpopper Danny Goffeys bedroom, not to mention supermodel Kate Mosses kitchen, she may have indeed achieved a similar success. The harsh rasping vocals of her Pistols esque take on the melodic buzz of the britpop sound backing her up give a definite edge to the slabs of indie excellence on display here. with stand out track "Shave Me" offering her manifesto for the future direction of Britpops sound in 1995 " Sh sh sh shave me, shave my head and lick my balls" or as on "Deep Fried" she sings "I want to lick your arse and lose my soul, taste my salty wine" clearly the ballsy in your face femme sexuality on display was a little too much for the wider industry and no major label came calling. Still this CD gives a GLIMPSE into a time when women were prepared to open a PANDORAs box of overtly sexual rock and roll. "Cheese me up and grill me till I'm Brown" indeed. If there is not already a designer drug called Afrodisiac, then someone, possibly Keith Allen needs to invent it. "Gets you so far gone that you can't come back......."
