I have used peanut butter on other traps and no luck. It is hard to clean off the peanut butter as well after a while. After purchasing this trap, I used pumpkin seeds instead. It took a while but it was able to catch a rat. A good thing about this trap from others is that the bar makes it easier to throw out the rat without throwing out the trap. With that said, an exterminator friend told me to put a milk crate or box over the trap so it does not inadvertently catch something else such as a dog or cat. It makes me wonder what else might be used to hide the trap from other animals. Update: Even thought I had this trap under a milk crate, I caught a sparrow bird. Why a bird was attracted to it, I don't know. I think there are covered tunnel traps that may be better to use with a milk crate to keep out the desired animals.

Had a rat in my garage. Set this trap with a dab of peanut butter placed in the bait cup. Killed it dead overnight. 5 DEAD. More rats have found our property: This single trap has killed FIVE rats so far. BEST to set it at night so squirrels or pets won't accidentally find it. EASY to set. Try setting it while in place on the ground. Be careful NOT to accidentally bump it while placing it. EASY to press the Red bar and it opens, disengaging the dead rodent without touching it. EASY to clean: just add a squirt of soap and spray off with hose or sink sprayer. Now, I first put a small piece of plastic food wrap in the bait cup, then add the dab peanut butter or bait. THis way I don't usually have to wash the greasy residue off.

I have a bunch of the older beige versions of this trap and have never had a rat escape from them (that I know of). These new grey ones seem to have a weaker spring (or some other change) and I find sprung traps with rat residue but no rat. They also seem to stick open if left set too long so a rat can push lightly on the trip plate and not set it off. I've taken to using Vaseline to lube pats of it so it trips more easily (not a problem I've had with the older traps). Still better than the old wooden traps.

Saw a rat in our back yard and bought this to take care of it. Set it and filled the little cup with peanut butter - so far 3 times, and still haven't caught it. The first 2 times, somehow the trap went off, but didn't catch it and it ate all the peanut butter and even chewed away part of the plastic cup it goes in. The 3rd time, it ate all the peanut butter without setting the trap off, as I guess it was able to reach it without stepping on the trip plate. The fatal flaw in this design is that the bait cup needed to be part of the trip plate..... I just ordered an old style trap where the bait goes on the trip plate. Those have always worked in the past.

I had purchased a pair of those common "humane" traps found on Amazon (light blue plasticW/ the "trip the door" mechanism. I had set the bait (the same bait that I used for the victor in fact – almond butter) and no luck over the course of about a week - even setting the traps in two different locations. I ordered just one single Victor M144, was careful to first set the bait in the little circle and THEN set the trap (which was easy to do and using the setting bar, never had to get my fingers near the trap bar). I don't know if two hours went by when I heard a snap from the kitchen. I went into the kitchen and saw the result. It appears this was the only rodent in the house at the moment. The vermin problem, for the moment, is eliminated. I took a picture but decided not to post it here because A) it's gross, obviously and B) other people have done so showing results similar to mine and C) I'm guessing/hoping you'll believe me. In my case, I think it was a large mouse and not a rat; regardless it worked perfectly. The next morning (making sure that it was fully deceased) I released the mouse in the main trash barrel outside very easily. (Although some folks might just prefer to throw the whole trap, etc. away which I can understand. However, after wiping it down, etc, it appears that it can be reused.)

This trap for us has worked well the majority of the time. We have a chicken coop and for some reason this year we have an infestation. They tend to hang out in there and come out at night. I caught my 11th rat this morning with this trap. Every now and then one will escape, (ever see the movie Mouse Hunt) but overall it does the job. I did have a couple of rats that were so big when the trap sprung, it did not kill them but held them so they could not escape (felt bad but they are a nuisance) and had to take my pellet gun and finish the job. 9 kills and 2 trapped rats...this trap does the job. It is easy to set and load the bait. I am buying another one for our shed as we have noticed some rats in there as well. I would highly recommend.
