Only Brand of Emergency Food Bars I'll Buy.
Just opened a 3600 calorie pack with an expiration date of 06/2014. Yep! Nine years past the expiration date. They're fine. Still sealed airtight, smelled and tasted just like they were manufactured yesterday. These (in my opinion) are effectively immortal.Taste like a slightly sweet, mildly coconut flavored cookie. Nibble them slowly and drink plenty of water with them. I like 'em just fine, but then I also liked the MCI Ham and Lima Beans (IYKYK).Purchased a new five-pack because more is always better, and I probably should swap out the 6/2014s just because.Highly recommend.

Probably the best value for ready-to-eat emergency foods
When bought in bulk, it's hard to beat the price - you get about 550 kcal per dollar for something that's ready to eat, fairly balanced nutritionally, quite palatable, and non-perishable. You could get more calories for your buck by stockpiling staples such as rice, sugar, or vegetable shortening - but then, you actually need to prepare something edible out of that.In contrast to many other sugary "emergency bars", such as Millennium Energy, the taste of Datrex bars isn't overwhelming, and they aren't insanely sweet. They have a mild, crumbly, biscuit-like consistency and a cookie-like flavor with a hint of coconut. It's actually something you can conceivably enjoy in a non-emergency setting. With a reasonable blend of carbs, fat, and protein, and with some vitamins thrown in, they are also probably quite OK for medium-term survival if it ever comes to that. The only major drawback is the hefty weight. For hiking or bugging out, you're probably better off with freeze-dried foods, such as Mountain House.

Old inventory
Only four stars because these emergency bars are advertised as having a 5 year shelf life, but the ones I received have a use by date of June 2027, only three and a half years. I wouldn't mind if they were six months old or so, but eighteen months? These were shipped from an Amazon Fulfillment center, so maybe not the fault of the manufacturer. They are dry and crumbly as other reviewers have noted, but the flavor is good and they were well packaged. I especially liked that each bar was individually wrapped in cellophane.

Big, inexpensive and heavy packages
This is much more generous than expected. I bought the five pack and it filled most of the essential compartment of my 40l bugout pack. With the impending US border invasion imminent, now is the time to get what you need and meet up in the desert, far far away from the cities. America Has Fallen!

Aged and Beat up
Not happy. These emergency rations are supposed to have a 5 year shelf life - 60 months. The items I received have only 27 months left. I can't imagine they have been sitting in storage for over half their lives, so it must be that someone else is swapping out their older ones for new, at my expense. The packages were all beat up considerably; some are softball shaped, so I assume it is just powder inside. That aside, have used these for years. They are a stable way to have some survival food on hand that is low risk for spoiling, lightweight, etc. We keep a couple of cakes in each car, in earthquake kits, in grab and go evacuation bags, etc. By themselves, the taste experience is lacking and there is nothing special about the texture; both are bland. However, we rotate through these by taking our older stock, crumbling up a cake into baked goods, stews, lasagna, meatloaf, you name it. They are also a handy source of protein and nutrients when camping. Surprisingly, when used as an additive, they seem to improve the overall taste of the meal.Bottom line - as a product, we recommend. Buying them here?? - this was our first time buying here; not again; perhaps look for fresher items, even if you have to pay a little more per package. We often do let some go for a few moths after the E-date, but don't go too long as they start to turn funny - taste and smell

Excellent deal fast, well packaged, and all current product.
Manufacturing < 30 days from order.Since i am currently munching on a pack I had in a another lot put away, EXP '18, still taste perfectly fine.4y PAST expiry! (Stored in airtight, dark cool place) so the exp date is a CYA or maybe *if* stored in extremes? These things are well made, if stored correctly, they seem to keep forever.Since my NRG-5 advertise 20y shelf life, but taste no where near as good, they are good to mix it up as well.Very happy, will stock more over time.

tastes quite good, and doesn't leave me extra thirsty
I keep these in my emergency supplies. I always try to test my emergency equipment before stowing it away to make sure I have an idea of what to expect when I need to rely on my equipment. I've previously purchased other emergency food bars and ration packs, but these Datrex bars are unconditionally my go-to bar now.I tend not to worry about making sure I have the healthiest ingredients in emergency food -- what I need is durability and affordability. Turns out Datrex makes an affordable product that is quite healthy (at least compared to much of the competition), performs well stored in my car all year, tastes quite good, and doesn't leave me extra thirsty. Definitely a winner in my book! Now I just supplement these with a few MRE rations so I can have some heated food available for a few evenings with extra emotional comfort in times of stress.
