Rhodia Reverse Standard Notebook - Graph, Orange 8.25" x 8.25"

Disclaimer: I'm not a big fountain pen person, nor do I write with a pen much at all in the digital age. Thus, while, I am still a bit of a paper snob ;-), I can't speak knowledgeably about other paper options out there except Midori, the high-end Japanese brand that is also prized by many fountain pen users. ABOUT RHODIA GENERALLY: I started using Rhodia paper when I was trying out fountain pens. I kept reading that this paper was superior for its level of absorbability -- it didn't bleed through, yet is less likely to smear which particularly matters to me as a left handed person. Rhodia, being a French company, sells European dimensioned paper — A4, A5, etc.) Most of their pads are “Super fine vellum" 80 gram paper which is just 5 grams heavier than standard US 20 pound bond paper -- think typical copy paper in weight/thickness. However, even though this isn't heavy bond paper, the finish is excellent for the aforementioned reasons. It's very smooth, and the paper fibers have a very fine grain. Thus, less porosity/absorption. Bottom line, it just feels nice, and of quality. Rhodia does offer bound notebooks (I haven't seen one in person), yet they don't seem to offer upscale bound notebooks, which would seem like an obvious market for them due to their superior paper. The bound ones are “faux Italian leather” (which I doubt is any nicer than “Joe Bob’s super-duper faux leather” ;~) — They do come in many cool colors. Some people may prefer, if not a nicer leather bound notebook, at least a pad that's a little more professional/flashier in appearance given the cost, and quality of this paper. This doesn't matter much to me, but to others it night. CONCERNING THIS PARTICULAR PAD: The "Reverse Book” “DotPad” 8.3" X 8.3" 80 gram. Besides dotted, it also comes in 5 mm graph paper, Orange or black cover. I don't know how many people want this particular dimension of paper, but I really like it. It’s called the reverse book since it's square it can be used with the spiral in any direction. I like Rhodia’s dot pattered pads. I don't really care that it helps keep the alignment correct when one is writing (if that's even is the intent?); I just like the uniqueness. REGARDING LEFTIES: Normal US spiral-bound notebooks are an annoyance for most of us lefties(or at least me). Since this pad may be used with the wire spiral on the right — upside-down/backwards (unlike standard US notebook paper that that is indented, so usually used with the indent on the left). Alternatively, with the wire spiral on top, thus it's a real advantage. I remember as a kid when there was a store in San Francisco that had products just for lefties such as scissors. They also had spiral notebooks that have the wire binding on the right so we would still have the indented line of notebook paper on the left when writing. Since it's a niche product, they were expensive compared to regular notebook paper. For most Americans, it's rare to find a pad that has a wire binding on top which helps as a lefty. The wire spiral is still in the way, since we lefties have a tendency to have our hand curled up high when righting. Nonetheless, it's better than having the wire coil on the left. The only pad that I'm aware of that is commonly available is a steno pad, which may not be the required/preferred dimensions, certainly not for school kids. Rhodia also offers pads that are stapled on top, which is easier to deal with for lefties. Hope this helps. God is love :)

I have shopped around for years trying different journals. Don't let me lead you astray, I was not out trying every journal out there but I have tried enough to know what I don't want. Or so I thought. I recently felt constricted with the lines on a page and switched over to the dot book/pages. While I can not write a straight line on blank paper (and had been concerned I would do the same here) it was not an issue. The more I use it the more I love it. This has lovely smooth pages that my Ink Joy pens as well as my felt tip pens glide over like butter. At first it felt weird and new. I missed the feel of the resistance which I had always felt but couldn't quite put it into words at first. Well I found the new shape easy to adapt to and started the task of copying items over from another journal. Fast forward about 6 weeks and I figured it was time to try my other journal that I had bought. This other journal was a top rated dotted grid one as well with a sturdy faux cover. I hesitated on no spiral binding but went for it. I have to say its a nice journal. Had I tried this first I may have liked it more. The "other journal". While my other journal is nice and meets or exceeds the criteria for a nice journal now i find the texture on the pages constricting. Almost like they are fighting me when I write. Then the more uniform/typical size feels constraining. After writing just a few sentences I hated it and wondered "Who am I!?!? What has this Rhodia dot book done to me!?!" I may never find joy in writing in regular notebooks again. I pushed through and wrote a few pages. Then for the time being (probably forever) I have retired it to the graveyard with my other past journals. The Rhodia is like a story of romance and intrigue. I feel completely free to express myself. It's new shape (to me) seems completely normal now. I love writing in this journal and now I am pushing myself to be more creative with it. I have my whole rainbow of pens already, I have started to incorporate some of my felt tip since now I know they write beautifully on it as well. Next you ask?? Well I have some decent quality color pencils I am going to break out. I have a hunch they will go beautifully on this as well. Some downsides for some, my ink does show as a shadow on the back of pages but for me its so subtle compared to what I am reading/writing it doesn't bother me but worth noting. It may just be my intense pens I am using or the nature of this paper. I love the spiral binding and how it lays so flat. The pages also have a perforation if you are interested in pulling them out with a clean edge. It is not as "Sturdy" as my other notebooks but I just write on a sturdy surface and it has not been an issue for me. For some reason it appears to be small to me (page count wise) but I have been doing a lot of writing and haven't even made it 1/4 of the way through. As far as having multiple copies and wanting to track things I find metallic permanent markers or paint pens work wonderfully. I have to say after years of many misses this one will likely be the one and only for me from now on. Give it a try, I hope this review has helped you make a decision. Happy _______ day! :-)

I cannot say enough good things about this little notebook. A little history: way back when, it seems like shortly after Guttenberg invented moveable type, when I was in architecture school, we were taken as freshman to the printing plant to make our own notebooks. I was able to design and make a notebook (9.5 x 8.5) using graphic arts stock (roughly 32 lb. smooth finish stock). My notebooks were double wire bound, which was newly available then, and used chip board covers front and back. The paper was thick and stood up to fountain pens, drawing pens and ink, and even moderately dry water color. I have to have these custom made now, and the cost is prohibitive at around $100 per 100 sheet notebook in lots of five ($500 a run). I have been searching for a more economical alternative, and this Rhodia notebook perfectly fits the bill. While I haven't tried the watercolor on this paper, it holds up well to virtually everything else. The square size is perfect for me, being close enough to my preferred size. I could live without the printed grid, but find it is not intrusive and often useful. The paper does feel flimsy, which might cause concern for fountain pen or technical pen users, but no worries, no matter what I do I have not been successful in creating feathering or bleed through. All Rhodia products use the same Clairefontaine paper (so I am told), but the combination of size and paper quality really works well for me. Another reviewer was disappointed that the back cover was not sturdier. I too prefer something stiffer for a back cover. I glued a piece of matt board to the inside of the back cover - problem solved!

Purpose : Bullet journal. I needed something with 1.Spiral Binder 2.Non-bleeding paper 3.Some form of grid or dot 4. Larger than tiny 5. Plastic or hard cover This fits the bill! I tested the paper with my Pentel Touch Pen and a Papermate Felt tip pen. Neither pen show on the other side of the page. The book is a good size without being too large. The pages themselves are square but the spine covers two of the grid spaces on the spine side. My grid is a usable 41 x 39 grid area. The grid in my book is a purple/blue color. You can also turn the book whatever direction you like to use as it's the same every direction. There is a perforation along the spine if you wish to remove pages that way. The cover is a hard plastic, matte inside and gloss outside. *edit* The cover is actually thick laminated cardboard with a plastic feel * The spine is a liiiiittle too small to hold anything other than a regular sized pen with a cap. After counting my pages I came up with 79. I probably missed one. Several pictures attached! *edit* after using for the month, I've found that it does take inks a few seconds to dry on the sheets, so I need to move slowly in order not to smear. Also if any water touches the sheet, the ink will smear. I might have accidentally put my hand down when my hand was slightly damp after washing my hands off, ended up with an nice smear across a page 😒, my fault but I was still sad. Lesson learned!!*

If you read the header, that says it all. This paper takes most pens, inks, water based markers, even paint markers in many cases with no bleed through, show through, or ghosting. Also most of these items don't feather or skip much on this paper. One will probably notice that the lines of their mediums appear thinner on this paper. That's because of its special coating. It takes pencil and dry mediums well too. I wouldn't expect to get a lot of layers with dry mediums. But one can use some mixed media. It takes erasing pretty well. I've had no issues with my pens and markers, gel inks, highlighters, liquid inks, correction fluids etc. They all interact nicely with this paper. I'd say the only things that'd cause issues are alcohol inks and markers and the heaviest juiciest inks and mediums. This is a squared style notebook with graph paper. It's sturdy yet flexible. The protective cover is nice. It looks great and feels great in the hand. I highly recommend Rhodia products to journalists, artists anyone. 😀

Purchased my latest version Feb 2025 and I noticed the grid lines have gotten darker and more prominent compared to versions I bought a few years ago. It's still a great writing book that lays flat, with good paper texture, but I prefer the lighter grid lines of older versions.

Favorite notebooks, the paper is super smooth, the size is fun and can be used horizontally or vertically. I have purchased many of these notebooks. If you like to write and notice paper quality, this is your notebook. Also love the dots vs squares or lines.

I use these for taking notes at work and have used them for years. The paper weight is nice and heavy so there is no bleed thru. The paper is also really smooth so it is great to work on. With the grid and square shape you can easily use the spiral at the top or one either side which can be handy if you are left-handed. I won't use anything else for note taking.
