Fly Pushing: The Theory and Practice of Drosophila Genetics 2nd Edition

I use this book as a reference when culturing fruit flies for a Genetics course. It is also an entertaining read for when the autoclave is down and I'm waiting for the repair man to arrive!

I'm a first year grad student, and I can't say enough good things about this book! It was extremely helpful in my lab rotation as well as my upper level genetics course (covered genetic model systems)

I used this to complement the fly genetics portion in the Genetics class I was taking. It was a great help and I highly recommend it students taking their first Genetics course at undergraduate or graduate level.

This book is very good. It wrote in a very simple , funny way, and i like it very much.

A basic when you work with flies. Not so pricy that I would highly recommend people to get one !

A really must-have!!!The basics, the tips,all for manipulating drosophila at the beginning and even later.Here you'll find a lot of informations about balancers, recombinations, how to do crosses, markers, etc...A very good introduction to the drosophila world!

ショウジョウバエの実験をすることになり、基礎知識を付けようと思い購入し早速読み進めているのですが、図解や絵などに乏しく、ショウジョウバエに関する予備知識と英語力が必要だと思いました。恐らく、どちらかというと平坦で口語的な英語で示されているため、帰国子女かネイティブの方なら読みやすいとは思いますが、大学受験の英語に慣れている方には、ショウジョウバエに精通している方が周囲にいないで独学でこれを読了するのは少々難しいと思います。ですが、日本語で出版されているショウジョウバエに関する教科書はほぼ皆無であるため、fly pushingを読むことは避けられないと思います。

ショウジョウバエって、植え継ぎ大変、組み換え体封じ込め大変で、とても素人には手が出せない、というのが普通の考えだと思います。一部のプロの方以外には縁がありません。私が学生時代、ショウジョウバエが専門の先生の講義を受けたときにも、ホメオボックスがどうだとか、トランスポゾンがどうだとかいう話は教わりましたが、例えば、ショウジョウバエの遺伝学を理解するのに不可欠なバランサーという概念は、教わった記憶がありません。私が忘れてしまったのかもしれませんが。そんな、素人の私が、あるショウジョウバエの遺伝子に興味を持ち、文献を読みこなすために買ったのがこの本です。基本から応用まで実に細かく書いてあります。実験書はネット上にも存在しますが、独特なショウジョウバエの遺伝学の理論をこれほどくわしく書いた本はないと思います。ショウジョウバエの研究室に所属して、師匠がいらっしゃる方には、ひょっとして、常識ばかりかもしれませんが、私のような素人には、実にありがたい本です。

simple..elegant and back to basics and if you are really interested in drosophila..it will be your go to book
