This is great though it is not for beginner French. Its exercises enable some research and further study by pupils so really good for AS level.

A very readable collection, in French, explaining much about the historical and current background that shapes the way the French view their country and how/why it works. Invaluable briefing book for intermediate French language scholars who actually want to live in France or work with the French.
