The parts are plastic, the balls are metal. This is obviously not a young kid toy. My 13 year old son wanted this for his birthday- which he could have handled caring for at his age. He had just opened the package and when we weren't looking my 4 year old played with it. In a matter of 1 minute all the balls were tangled and one broke from the string. I think the value of this is more like $4. If you buy this- and you don't want it broken by kids- keep it up high at all times.
