This is not the case with fungus gnats and in fact, the gnats and larvae do not harm the plant (though they are unsightly) I would recommend the following courses of action :- If you wish to control the gnat itself then consider using an insect spray such as Kybosh, much as you would treat flying insects in your house. I have attached a copy of the label for your perusal To stop the larvae from developing in the compost :- Water your plants from the base of the plant so that the top of the compost remains dry. This will discourage the fungus and so stop the larvae Apply a decorative aggregate such as gravel to the top of your pots to a depth of 1cm. This will stop the gnats from laying eggs in the compost as the gravel will stop them reaching it. I wish you well in your endeavours. **Q: Will this work on white tiny flies on my plants? They mainly sit on the soil. If not, then how to get rid? :(** A: In response, it is unlikely that this will control your problem. The adult flies that you have reported on the foliage and on the surface of the compost are regarded as a nuisance pest rather than a plant pest. The tiny white thread like larvae of these flies reside in the top layer of the plant compost and it is this compost that the larvae feed on.
