Yep, you read that right, black frosting. I started with a really good chocolate buttercream frosting that I have used multiple times, and did not have to add much of this color to get to a nice, deep black. It was a large batch of frosting (I used 4 pounds of powdered sugar), and I think I ended up using a tablespoon of this color. I ended up with a brownish black color, but I did make the frosting the night before to give the color a chance to deepen, and it worked out very well. I could not tell that it affected the flavor of the frosting, and the bride was pleased with the results.
