I have not tried to light a fire with one but they do produce a good amount of sparks with the appropriate pressure and force. There is a coating on the flint which needs to be rubbed or scratched off before any sparks occur.I have used them to make several paracord bracelets. I did not find them to be uncomfortable even though the buckles are a bit large. They may be a bit awkward for anyone with small wrists. (I wound up having to use a set of alligator foreceps, also bought on Amazon*, to help me push it through the space.)The striker takes a bit of getting used to. I had a fairly difficult time drawing a spark from it at first, but eventually got a spark so big it startled me--I thought for a second I might burn down the place. ;)I don't know why some reviewers knock the whistle for not being loud. It is fairly easy for me to get it to whistle so loudly that it hurts my ears.The only thing I was disappointed about was the "cutting edge." Good luck getting it to cut anything. Whatever you do manage to cut with it will likely wind up looking like it was attacked by an army of miniature beavers.
