Pretty much just what i needed, simple but effective bare drive storage

*by D***E on Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2013*

Buying external drives doesn't make sense to me anymore, so i have docks and bare drives. Why not just store the bare drives as is?Bare drives weren't mean to be stored on the shelf, especially for long periods. They are prone to moisture, dust, bugs, spills, falling, etc... So the obvious need is a shell for them to live in.Design:-It's all one piece of plastic, the hinge being just a thing flexible plastic. That's definitely the weakest link, but i don't get the impression it will break. Inside it's just bare plastic, and inside the top of the lid is a bit of foam. I don't think that foam is there as a shock absorber, as much as it's there just to ensure the drive is held snugly in place. Keep in mind it's not expected that you're going to start throwing this thing around, you should still treat your drives with care.-Then on the outside you have labels facing in several directions, so you can easily mark what's inside.-And then there's a feature which i'm on the wall about. Each case can stack horizontally onto one another, because they put on the front of every case a lifted groove, and on the back, a recessed groove. So they kind of lock into each other. Not a bad idea if you want to store these like that. But i prefer to store them on the side, lid top facing out, and in that case, this groove makes it annoying to try and just pull one drive out. It isn't a huge annoyance, and just leaving some space between them or even a piece of paper between them solves it, but a consideration nonetheless.Quality:Feels like the good kind of plastic, not one that's going to crack for no reason. And a good thickness of it as well, i'm reassured that should an accident happen, this will protect my drive. Keeping realistic of course, if the drive drops out of a 3rd story building, i'm expecting tragedy. This isn't going to replace a pelican hard case with full inside foam. One last thing to note is that there isn't a seal around the opening, so this isn't water tight. There is however a lip, so it's very unlikely a splash of water is going to get inside. Again, these cases aren't for those wishing to abuse their drives, if you want to play waterpolo with your drives, get a pelican.

    Fatal flaw?

*by D***E on Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2012*

I bought 5 of these cases to house my most precious data in an off site backup RAID disk set consisting of five 2TB mechanisms. My backup drive is a Drobo S, and I swap the disk pack weekly, keeping one backup disk pack off site. Each of the five off site drives is stored inside a MUKii drive case, and the set of 5 drives is in turn kept inside a Pelican 1450 case with padded dividers for transport.I like the MUKii cases fine. But one major problem: the plastic tab which retains the lid is fragile. I am not hard on equipment, but the first day with my 5 MUKii 3.5" drive cases, one of the lock tabs broke off. This happened with normal pressure, simply opening the case.As anyone who has picked up a briefcase that was not properly secured knows, it is a terrible thing to dump the contents of a case all over the floor. A fragile lock tab may seem like a minor issue, but it could be terrible if it resulted in dropping and damaging a hard disk mechanism. It would ruin my day to lose one of the drives from my RAID. And considering that some of my RAIDs require matched sets of drives (identical model and firmware) and replacement issues as product lines are constantly refreshed, it could get into a great deal of time and money to replace and rebuild an entire array of drives.I immediately ordered a replacement MUKii case and discarded the one with the broken latch tab. This critical piece of the MUKii case is grossly underengineered. If I'd had time, I should have ordered samples on various products, but for sake of expediency, I am going to stick with MUKii for now. But if I have another latch tab break, I will probably throw out all the MUKii cases and go with another brand.
