King of the hill, at least for now

I've had this on my Amazon wish list for well over a year - a very desirable upgrade to my Western Digital MyCloud EX2 Ultra, but not needed yet. Suddenly, a week ago, the MyCloud wasn't happy any longer. One of its two hard drives was reportedly failed. I immediately placed an order for this QNAP Nasbook and four 2 TB WD RED SA500 M.2 2280 SATA SSD memory modules to populate it (on the QNAP list of compatible SSDs.)On arrival, it was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to physically install the SSDs. There was only a thin pamphlet of diagrams to follow. Here are the key points: 1) to open the case, pry the rubber feet loose; they are on retainers so won't get lost. Then use a coin to unscrew the four case screws and lift off the cover. 2) before installing the SSDs, there are thermal strips to be attached to both sides of each SSD, and then a metal heat radiator to be stuck onto the top thermal strip. 3) Then insert each SSD as usual for memory, and fasten with an included tiny screw. One of the four screwholes required adding a magnet to my jeweler's Phillips screwdriver to hold the screw as I lowered it into position. From there it was a simple matter of plugging the 10GbE port into the 10GbE port on my iMac ($100 option at purchase from Apple), and the 1GbE port into a port on my router, and powering on.Electronic setup is next. At the QNAP web site you can create an account and then install Qfinder Pro to help your system find the new NAS and bring up its management interface. This is also where you'll find a manual. Configuration was fairly easy - the default with 4 SSDs is RAID5, which maximizes both speed and storage. (This is because the 10GbE port is faster than the SSD's SATA ports, so splitting the load among several SSDs speeds things.) The only task which took time for me was optimizing the size of each of the two volumes I wanted. The system really wanted me to leave 20% of the space free, and that meant I had to get each volume sized just right to fit all of the data coming from the MyCloud NAS. Fortunately, the process of both increasing and decreasing volume size was easy. I also had to choose a name and password for logging into the QNAP NAS, after which I was able to easily find my volumes from the iMac and map them to desktop aliases.Moving the data was simple: Just open a window on the iMac desktop to the same volume on both the MyCloud and the QNAP, and drag the contents of that volume from the MyCloud to the QNAP. Copying speed was limited by the 1GbE link to the MyCloud, which is impressive, as normally writes take longer than reads. I lost connection once when the MyCloud decided on its own to update its firmware during the copy, but was able to figure out what still needed to be copied and do so afterwards. The firmware update and reboot of the MyCloud also somehow healed the dead hard drive, at least temporarily.I now have the MyCloud shut down as a full backup of my system in case one is ever needed, and am now using only the QNAP NAS.Overall, highly recommended!Update: One problem with the setup I describe above is that the system network ends up with two active subnets. That only mattered to one program I use, but kept it from working at all. The fix was to add a QNAP 10GbE switch, and move the cable for the network router from the 1GbE port on this SSD NAS to a 2.5GbE port on the QNAP switch. All is now well again.

    Used the NAS 10gbe port

*by I***N on Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020*

What I needed, the raid 1-0 setup with 4 1TB sata 3 drives, resulted in a transfer around 5Gbs, when using as a NAS , using to 10Gbe port. The slowness more due to the limitations of sata 3, its what I expected. Maybe one day we will see an NVME nas at affordable prices

    Solid performer. Really compact.

Neat device. Help files are not in sync with product software revisions but you can muddle your way through. Some idiosyncrasies regarding where permissions can be entered AND have them stick. Performance is good and stability is excellent. The qnap software is not quite as good as the synology competitor, but close.
