Irene has a new Superintendent who pays far too much attention to the male members of the team, and very little at all to the women. The Superintendent is flirty, slick and smart.Two young teenage girls have been found dead - and mutilated. Another corpse has been found walled up in a demolished building. The team takes to calling this one "The Mummy." With one member of the team gone and vacations impending, Irene and her team are overwhelmed. The new Superintendent tricks the Cold Cases Unit into taking the Mummy case.They strongly suspect and then learn that the young girls are being found via the internet. When solid evidence links the two deaths, the team hopes to set a trap for "Mr. Groomer."The book goes back and forth between the two investigations. When the denouement comes, it comes very fast.We have brief interludes with riveting information about Irene's personal life.This book is extremely well written and plotted. Ms. Tursten is in her element here. As part of Gothenburg's Violent Crimes Unit, Det. Huss must find the killer of two young girls who were lured to their deaths via an Internet chat room. At the same time, Sven Andersson, Huss' former boss and current member of Gothenburg's two-man cold crimes unit, races against the clock to solve a murder committed in 1983, but only recently discovered, before the statute of limitations takes effect. Andersson's only clue is a cryptic reference to "The Net."What I like most about Tursten's stories is her ability to show Huss' many roles... those of a police detective, wife, mother, and in this story, once again as a devoted daughter. Through the eight stories to date, the reader has been witness to the many challenges of raising twin daughters and keeping a loving family together while at the same time dealing with aging parents. I like the Huss family, and I was disappointed this time out with neither her professional dealings nor with the family dynamics.There are two more books in the series that haven't yet been translated into English. For me, two things make Detective Inspector Irene Huss stand out among the legions of Scandinavian police people -- she's not depressed, and she has an interesting and involving personal life. Those patterns persist in this latest outing, though the tone is a bit darker than in some of the earlier stories: Irene's daughters have left home, her mother is failing, and she has problems with her new boss. But Irene soldiers on. This time, the central focus is on a killer who entraps young girls over the internet; tracking him down and setting him up is a gripping story. There is a subsidiary story centered on a long-dead body found walled up in a collapsed building -- was he part of another sort of net, a net of spies?
