## Questions & Answers

**Q: The price is 50-75% less than Drop Cam, but how inferior is the quality?**
A: Quality is way better on the Drop Cam. I have 3 Dropcams and bought a Foscam based on the reviews and price from Amazon. I guess it is good for the cost but there is absolutely no comparison when it comes to quality. I have 2 Dropcams pointed outside, through windows between plantation blinds and the glass (Foscam is too big to do this). IR does not work through glass, of course, but at night I can see almost as clearly from the streetlights as I can during the day. The field of view (130deg) is huge. I purchased the Foscam to point into my fenced off back yard because I did not want to shell out another $200 for another Dropcam. As I said before, it is too big to fit between the glass and blinds, so as a test I set it on the back patio thinking that maybe I could get one of the outdoor mounts for it. I was not happy with the quality at all. Imagine trying to go from HDTV back to 480p. There was also a slight delay in the pan. The audio function is also better implemented in Dropcam. I can hold a conversation with my kids while I'm out via the Dropcam Iphone app through my indoor dropcam with a barely noticeable delay. Using the Foscam google chrome webpage, I could only recieve audio. It does everything that it claims to do and if I had initially purchased Foscams I would probably be content but the Dropcam HD is just a superior product to this particular model of Foscam.

**Q: is camera rated for outdoor use**
A: There's a video setting for 50Hz/60Hz/Outdoor, which optimizes the video quality when used with light bulbs driven by 50Hz or 60Hz line voltage. Setting to Outdoor doesn't turn it magically into a waterproof camera, but would be the best setting if viewing an outdoor scene through a window.

**Q: is this camera weather proof?**
A: The camera is not weather proof. However, if you can protect it from driving rain through judicious placement such as on a covered porch or under protected eaves, it will do just fine. I have five Foscam cameras and two have been outside for two years. They work flawlessly. They have endured extremes of temperature from below zero to nearly 100 degrees as well as high humidity in the form of fog.

**Q: I have a couple questions... 1st, I am monitoring our cats in our house. The camera is triggered by the movement of the cats going into an area (and then out of sight), but it never triggers a notification email when they come back through the same area. How do I catch them coming out? 2nd, I receive a great deal of …**
A: BAM, I am a machine vision engineer. The motion detection algorithm with the onboard software is very, very rudimentary in that it uses a full frame image comparison which subtracts the current frame from the previous frame to see what has changed. If that change involves enough pixels with significant RGB values differences, you'll receive an email. The onboard software is also notoriously slow. That's the reason that you some times miss the cats exiting. You'll be much better served purchasing third party software which runs on your computer. Try Blue Iris for PCs or Evocam for Macs. Both allow you to set motion sensors or regions of interest within the frame so that you can look at just that particular area for motion and not the entire image. In addition, both provide gain and threshold adjustment for the sensor or region of interest. All this translates into faster processing and fewer false triggers. These programs also provide you a faster, more capable interface with the camera than you have through the browser. They allow you to tailor responses to motion and audio alerts as well as record video. If you are a Mac user, you have an additional choice with another program called uFoscam. It, too, is very capable and only costs $5.99.

A day in the life of my dogs!

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2013*

I have two little dogs at home and I like to be able to watch them when I'm away, I just want to make sure they are okay. (Yes I am one of those over-protective pet-mommies!) I originally bought the Cisco WVC80N but since it didn't pan or tilt I had to buy 4 just to cover half of the blind spots in the room and my dogs like to wander, so at $100 each that was getting too expensive, plus they didn't have 2 way audio, just one way and no night vision. Then I saw this Foscam and since it had good reviews I decided to give it a try. I absolutely love it!Setup was a breeze and I had it working in under a minute (i'm a bit of an electronics geeks so this may not be an average time estimate). The interface is easy to use and gives you multiple options to access the camera feed based on the browser you are using. I've tried it with IE, Firefox, and Chrome and IE gives you the most features (due to ActiveX) but I swear the resolution is better with Firefox (this could be because the image is slightly smaller and so it just appears better quality).I'm not overly thrilled with the Foscam Android app, as it didn't have controls to move the camera but it does have the 2 way audio. However there are plenty of other IP cam apps out there that you can use to control it, I use IPCamViewer Basic. The audio isn't the best, there tends to be feedback when you try to use the microphone while listening to the audio through speakers but its clear enough that my dogs seem to recognize my voice. I used it during a recent thunderstorm to calm my dogs while I was at work. The highest resolution the camera has is 640x480 which isn't the best but its good enough. There is a higher resolution camera from Foscam (I think its the 9810?) that looks like this one for $100 more but for my purposes, and probably most peoples purposes, this resolution is fine. Even in night vision mode the resolution is still pretty decent (at least for a network camera). And by the way night vision mode is awesome! I can easily make out my little pups when they are hiding in the dark corner when the world outside gets too scary.Overall I can't say enough good things about this camera. I highly recommend it, for its price point I think its one of the best on the market. Though a warning to all pet parents who have nosy animals, make sure you put it up high. When I first got the camera (before I mounted it) I set it on a high table and one of my dogs found it and started sticking his face into the camera and even now that i've mounted it I find him frequently staring directly into the camera. :-)

Great camera, even better features, only drawback is set-up and software...

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2014*

I've had this little camera for quite a bit now, I bought it primarily to keep an eye on firearms and check in at home while I'm away, an addition to my home security and alarm systems. The camera itself is pretty great, great value, and the features work exactly as you expect for them to.Well, the talk and listen feature was not what I thought, but it still works in its own way (you can only listen OR talk, cant do both, think of a walkie-talkie type function)The camera resolution is pretty good, and motion detection and IR work fine, the remote movement with phone apps lags a bit, as does the video (this kinda varies with each app) but it was anticipated so there's really no negative remarks there. So as you might imagine, the only thing left to complain about is the software and the pain that it CAN be to set up.Really, if you skip the "oh this seems simple, how hard can port forwarding be, even though I've never done it..." mind set, and actually call the good folks at Foscam, you can have this little bugger set up and goin in no time.If you however, decide to try this yourself, and have never messed with your router settings and things of that sort, I recommend you reconsider, and have a tech remote access your computer and help you out.The software Foscam comes with and requires you to use, even some of the Foscam apps, seem lacking, not very intuitive, and sometimes defeat the purpose of having these cameras.A simple function, like On/Off push notifications for motion detection is missing, and even some the PAID apps don't have it.But really, third party apps and software kinda make up this slip up, and you still have the rock solid hardware that really makes for a sweet working little IP Cam.All in all, I'm more than likely to buy another couple of these and really set up an nice indoor IP surveillance system with these Foscams. I'd recommend them.

    No support

*by R***D on Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024*

These were great workhorse cameras in their day, but Foscam app won't add these any longer saying "device too old". I got 10 years of service from these (relatively poor resolution) cameras so I have no complaints besides the deliberate obsolescence forced upon us by the company.
