If you're really looking for ideas and instructions for various types of visible mending THIS BOOK is what you want!I have a feeling that cover photos (yeah, don't judge a book by its cover, right?) are partially to blame for Mending Matters getting better sales. Japanese boro and sashiko techniques are popular and MM has several jeans on the cover showing that - and it looks nice and minimal. For some reason, I really don't dig the cover of VM, as the colorful square looks like a childish patch and you have to look closely to see just how well done the mending square has been done.IN SHORT, BUY Visible Mending for *excellent* usable content and ignore the sub-par cover. I would have paid $150.00 easily for jeans like these. Instead, Jenny, my daughter, incorporated pieces of doilies my mother crocheted years ago and I have an item of clothing that is not only hip; but a part of my heritage.The book "Visible Mending" gives lots of ideas of how to update clothing that may have a hole or rip and end up with something that is timely and fashionable! It only covers five techniques, and just the basics of those, so you can learn what this book teaches you by doing a basic search.But what this book offers that the web doesn't is inspiration. The photographs just inspired me to go try various things. That I can't find on the web.It's not very thick, instructions are basic at best, it's full color, lots of photographs, printed on good paper.I bought the book as I wanted to do artistic mending, not really to save any garment. I was intrigued by the chapter on darning as I've always heard that term but never really knew what it was. I followed the directions and darned an old knitted afghan that had holes in it. This was my first time ever darning and I found the directions easy to follow.It loses a point for only having the most simplest of instructions. Once the photographs have inspired you to do, for example, boro/sashiko stitching, you will have to go back to the web to get patterns as none are offered. Ditto embroidery and the other techniques discussed.So buy this for inspiration and get your techniques off the web.
