Augason is a trusted brand for me, so I think it is worth the try. IF you dont like this TVP, then it is not a reflection on the brand. It is that you likely just dont like TVP. Its an excellent long term item, so you may want to consider it no matter what.Texturized vegetable protein is fun to work with. I have been eating it on and off for 25 years. I am not vegan or vegetarian, I just dont always need/want/can afford meat. TVP can be purchased plain or can be purchased flavored (ie chicken, or beef usually). It basically takes on whatever flavor you pair it with, and has a good long shelf life. Now have it packed in a container from Augason Farms? Ya got 10 years or more with it, easily. ALSO works nicely to STRETCH meat based meals. Swap out some meat for this.This is their beef option. It is already in crumble form. Basically meant to look like cooked beef crumbles when cooked/soaked. Give it time to absorb liquid, and then after that do what you want with it. I dont think it technically needs to be cooked. No concerns like with meat. Add it to chili, add it to tacos, add it to spaghetti sauce, or Shepards pie, etc and so on.TVP has a good amount of protein per serving (11 grams), has 2 grams of fiber, 2 grams fat (non saturated), a bit of sodium, but that is balanced by the good amount of potassium. Even offers some iron and calcium. No cholesterol!1/4 cup dry = 1/2 cup prepared (it expands!). 100 calories per serving, 40 servings per container.This canister has 4000 calories. Very important to know if storing for emergencies and food shortages or other SHTF situations. This is not the time to be worried about being on a diet. If things are bad, you will be burning through calories just to get through day to day stuff. The amount per serving is not high, but once paired with some carbs, one can get many meals from this.These canisters (#10-- to be read as "number 10" not, 10 pound) are well constructed. I never worry about mild dings or dents. The size is to keep a uniform look and stackability for longer term supplies. Basically stuff like this comes in this size can (no matter the weight, so yes, there may be a lot of air depending on what you buy), or a couple of different sized pails. All uniform in shape and appearance.Cans supposedly float."best by" date is ten years out (some products are 25 years). The most obvious date is printed as when it was manufactured. I buy Augason often, and I have seen in nearly every review section someone crying about getting an expired can (a date from a couple months ago). Friend, that is when it was made. I highly doubt it is an expired can because that means that it is from 10-25 years ago. Your can logo is current. The best by (not an actual expiration), is going to be among the printed info, but maybe not as obvious. So right now it is 2022, look for 2032 (or 2047 for the 25 year shelf life stuff).Since I buy these for long term storage, I rarely have a need or desire to open them up. I do try to buy when on sale (proactively) to increase my supplies, but also for times when I do want to get into something. Some of the price is based on the storage container, so I really dont want to get into them if I can simply buy the same thing in non long term storage format. But once in awhile the price is better than store shelf stuff. TVP is nearly the same across the board, and I have no concerns with the quality of this stuff. Easy way. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ok I KNOW what it looks like, but try it *by H***A on April 21, 2022* when I tell you that this looked and smelled exactly like cheap dog food I mean I literally was concerned that somehow I had gotten a container of dog food. I figured I would add the water and you know let it soak it up and see how I felt from that point and it just looked more like dog food and so I tasted a teeny tiny piece of it and I almost threw it away because it was so salty and it didn’t really taste like meat at all I was just... honestly offended on behalf of my taste buds lol. But, I figured I would finish cooking with it and so I threw it in some spaghetti sauce and you know cooked it up and oh my gosh this is so delicious I don’t understand what happened because on its own it tastes straight up awful. But when I cooked with it sorcery happened I mean that’s the only thing I can figure because it is so delicious. I'm definitely going to keep trying recipes out. I’ve had the red mill tvp and I couldn't eat it. It just wasn't good. But I figured I'd give this a shot because it had such nice reviews and I'm so glad I did. I'm curious about the chicken one now Tbh. as a sidenote if the people that own this company see this review I would love a ground pork option as well. it looked like dog food it smelled like dog food it tasted like a bucket of weird salt but when you actually cook with it 10 out of 10 recommend.
