Most of the boxes of Carnation list it, but this box does not. I definitley don't want Carrageenan in my food.** A: I've been using the Classic French Vanilla for years and I've never had any problems with it. Carrageenan is not found in the ingredients on the box. I did a little research on the Carrageenan. The following is what I found: Carrageenan is a thickening, gelling, stabilizing, binding and emulsifying agent that is harvested from red seaweed and algae. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, "Large amounts of carrageenan have harmed test animals' colons; the small amounts in food are safe." While it has been used as a food additive for hundreds of years, analysis of its safety as an additive continues.Uses in FoodDesserts, ice cream, milk shakes, sweetened condensed milks, cottage cheese, chocolate milk, whipped cream, jellies, puddings, soups and sauces contain carrageenan to increase viscosity. In beer, it is a clarifier that removes haze-causing proteins, and in processed meats, it increases water retention and volume. Carrageenan thickens some brands of soy milk and is found in diet soda. Infant formulas contain carrageenan as a thickener, emulsifier and stabilizer, and according to a study in the Nov. 1, 1993, edition "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," it has been found to be safe and not immunosuppressive or associated with increased upper respiratory infections. How this information is in helping with the French Vanilla is not certain. Checking into everything else in this information may help in deciding whether or not the Milk Chocolate should be used. I tried it once years ago and did not the taste and never used it again. **Q: Could you add this to coffee?** A: Good Question! Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Drink is delicious with 8 fl. oz. of cold milk. Yes, you can also mix the Carnation Breakfast Essentials® in coffee or tea and have a 'latte' type of drink. You can use hot or cold water, but we suggest starting out with 6 fl. oz. of water rather than 8 fl. oz. and increasing the water amount until your taste preference is reached. Fat-free milk, also called nonfat or skim milk, contains no more than 0.2% milk fat. You can also use milk replacements such as soy milk, rice milk, almond milk or goat milk, etc. The nutrition would be adjusted according to the nutrients in that product. These different milk sources will vary in calories, protein, fat, etc as compared to cow's milk. Some even prefer using water.
