It would make a very good first pocketknife for a boy, functional and sturdy yet inexpensive enough that when it is inevitably lost it isn't a huge loss. The knife is fairly sharp out of the box but I can get it better. The steel appears to be 420 or 440C, decent steel that will take a good edge.
