I bought myself a second desk after getting the Altra 9176096 Metal Desk with Bookcase, Black on Silver. This has become my primary desk for working on schoolwork and using my laptop (the keyboard tray is a nice feature to save space on the top of the desk) -- I was originally going to use it as a workbench, but I liked it enough that I decided I didn't want to ruin its surface with scratches and knife marks. While it may be a little small for some, the size is perfect for me; there is enough space to have my laptop running on the side and keep papers and a notebook open on the desk surface. I'm actually using it without the top portion, since I have more use for a large flat area than a small shelf -- there are a few holes on the edges but usually they are covered by something. One thing to note is that this desk is HEAVY! Might be because the wood seems like it is high quality. I had to carry it piece by piece into my room (on the second floor) for assembly, but after it is assembled you can slide it around a bit. Instructions are easy to follow, assembly takes about 60-90 minutes for one person working alone, and a lot of that is maneuvering the heavier pieces into place, so with two people it should go substantially faster.Pros:+ Good price+ High quality wood+ Good finish (does not absorb water, easy to clean)+ Good instructions, relatively fast assembly+ Keyboard tray is useful to save space if you're using it as a computer deskCons:- Very Heavy- May be a little small if you have multiple monitors, or need extra "working area" ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet desk *by A***A on Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2016* I have attached pictures of the South Shore Axess Collection Desk, Chocolate but would like to apologize for the mess on the desk as I had just moved when these were taken.The price point on the desk is pretty nice for the quality and build you get. I didn't expect anything that I could throw out a window and it still stay together, however, I also didn't expect a plastic desk with wheels that could fall apart at any minute; this desk fit the bill perfectly.When I first opened this my home was dim lit so it looked almost black. The picture that is from the advertisement must be in extremely good lighting because this desk in normal home lighting is very very dark chocolate. It was a none issue as I actually like this look better, but it is slightly different than the picture for anyone concerned with the look.This wasn't difficult to put together but it was tricky doing it alone, but I managed. If you are putting this together you may want to have an extra set of hands to hold up certain boards just so you don't break or snap anything. Just like any other compressed board items you buy, it was simple and straight forward with the construction of this, it took me about an hour from start to finish. One thing to note, on the right side of the drawer the gap at the top is a bit wider than that of the bottom. To most it's not noticeable but since I was the one putting it together it did catch my eye pretty easily. This sits our bedroom now in a corner so it's not a problem but for someone who may have this in their living room it could be noticeable by anyone paying attention.The quality of this feels extremely nice. It feels very durable and sturdy. Obviously I wouldn't go kicking and hitting it but if you were to put multiple monitors, speakers, external hard drives, etc it would hold up. Really not that hard to put together, although I am very handy. Only problem is that I didn't realize until half way through that the top of the desk had a surface crack across one side. I decided to finish it and see if I can get a replacement from the manufacturer. I will update with results. Really not a bad desk for the price. The design is great, but the material is cheap. It's pressed wood with a very thin veneer. I've had items made of similar material and I know they don't last. But, for the price it's ok. If they send me a replacement top I'll be happy. ASSEMBLY TIP: lay out the pieces like they show in step 1 and it's much easier to put together.UPDATE:Emailed South Shore customer service this morning. Here is the customer service email: South Shore Service This afternoon received a response that they are sending me a new desktop. They're also sending me the studs to connect to the base.
