What a way to start your 1st day! *by I***T on Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2014* We find our main character on a puddle jumper demoted and transferred to an isolated post. On touch down he is a witness to an accident that turns out to be homicide, he's out of uniform and over his head within the first hour of landing at his new post. Not your typical murder mystery! I really enjoy the Kate Shugak series and noticed that the author had also written another series. As a whim I decided to try the Liam Campbell series, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story line. The main character is not your typical homicide investigator, he works hard at trying to understand, stumbles, tries to manage his own life and manages to solve the mystery when chaos abounds him. I have read a lot of James Lee Burke and was disheartened when I figured out the authors formula for mystery, the same with Patricia Cornwell (I still recommend reading their books for an intelligent read). I enjoy Dana Stabenow's books because the characters are not overly intelligent, and they work hard to solve the mystery (sometimes stumbling over evidence by accident). If you like murder mystery books and are looking for change from the usual formulated mysteries, try this book and you'll find yourself enjoying the story. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars left hanging *by K***4 on Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2012* Seven months ago, I was loaned this ebook and then I had to return it before I finished. This book was then put on my list of one that I wanted to read (finish). I really wanted to find out the ending.Liam Campbell is an Alaskan state trooper that is reporting to his new post. As he is stepping off the plane, there is a murder--standing above the victim is a previous lover of his, Wy. Next thing he knows is there has been a shoot out in this small town also.Several months later, I was able to get another copy of this book to be able to finish it as I was really interested to see who killed Bob, the victim Liam first ran into. There are a few more murders, some deceit going on as well. Overall all a pretty good book, you got a glimpse of 'life' with the natives up in Alaska and the story line kept your interest. After reading a few pages, I was quickly able to refresh my memory as to who all the characters in the book were and what role they played so I did not have to start back at the beginning. (Though I normally do have a great memory).The only thing I was not happy with was the ending...it just sort of stopped and did not end but, then again this is a series of books about Liam Campbell so I knew there was more to come. I just was not sure if each book was just going to be a story if or if there was a timeline in which you should read them in order. At the end of my ebook, there was a short excerpt from the next book in the series, So Sure of Death, and it picks up 3 months later from where this one ended--so it sort of helped to give a glimpse in regards to the ending and what was going on between Liam and Wy. I do plan on reading the next book in this series. Dana Stabenow also has a Kate Shugak series and from what I have heard that is suppose to be an excellent series but, I have not yet had a chance to read any of those books yet. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Really great story *by D***Q on Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2021* Great story and good characters. Can you imagine stepping off a plane and immediately finding a body? What's worse, it is YOUR job now to find out what happened. Then the former trooper comes running up, tells you to have a good one, jumps on a plane, and flies away. You have a dead body, no place to stay, no idea even where the police station is - if there is one - and your uniform, gun, everything is still to be unloaded off the plane. From such a humble beginning, things go downhill. Very well written and enjoyable.
