It is not what you are used to, if you solder, weld, or braze

I was hesitant to try this after reading all the other reviews, but after some trial and error, and error, it worked quite well, and as advertised.A few things that others might find helpful:Chemical cleaning is important, remove any oil, paint, or other dirt. Solvent or even flux will help a bit, but after that..Mechanical cleaning is a MUST. Wire brush, sanding, or machining. The outer oxidation layer that is on aluminum after it is exposed to the air for even a short period of time MUST BE REMOVED.Temperature control is critical. It appears to have a very narrow window of functionality compared to what you would experience soldering copper pipe , or brazing. Having some experience controlling heat with a torch will shorten the learning curve.I ended up using the welding rod kind of like a brush to put the solder/braze where I wanted it.It also appears to have very low wicking ability. My guess here is it is possibly partially temperature related, as the inside of the piece being worked will have a lower temperature then the side facing the flame. I did find that when I could access the other side of the item being connected, I could do a nice connection without affecting the side already done.(I really do not know if this is actually soldering or brazing, it acts a bit more like brazing, but it is...different)From a strength point of view, I did not test to the point of destruction, but I did test to a much higheer level than the part would be subjected to in operation. In one operation I joined an 1/8" x 3" round flat plate to a 2 1/2" x .065" tube joined only on the outside of the tube, then chucked the tube in the lathe and cut the plate concentrically taking as much as an .020" bite without the parts separating or the joint failing. The joint, or repaired area is harder than 6061 T6 aluminum and machines, drills, and threads nicely.A little bit of rod goes a long way, and I am looking forward to trying it on some cast alum repairs.
