There are many variations so be sure to match the prongs exactly. In my case, even though I had a perfect match and everything plugged together with no problem, the plug on this adapter that went to the older 3-prong dryer outlet of my home became very hot only a few minutes after turning on my dryer and smelled like something was burning. It turned out to be one of the prongs that clearly showed it had overheated and the base of the plug was noticeably scorched. After having my electrician come out to assess the problem, he determined it was the adapter that caused the problem. I would therefore recommend that you use the money to just have an electrician install the newer 4-prong dryer outlet so that your dryer will plug directly in. Maybe I just received a faulty one but I wouldn’t chance it especially when you’re dealing with a 220v line. **Q: I took a 3 prong plug from older dryer and put it on newer dryer that came with 4 prong. It ran but emitted a burning smell. Will this adapter help?** A: I was worried about that too but this adapter uses heavy gauge wiring and I have been using it for a month with no problems.
