    A Five-Star Book on a Five-Star Camera: What a Combination!

*by R***Y on Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017*

This is a very well-done book, and the author has done a fine job of producing what, in all honestly, Sony itself should have produced. You can look at the book as the manual that SHOULD have come with the camera but did not. Sony’s printed and e-manual is fine when it comes to looking up bare facts and a few techniques, but is missing oh-so-much.The book is printed on standard 8 ½ x 11 –inch paper, which is nice for a whole bunch of reasons. First, it allows a much easier-to-hold book that the Sony manual, which, of course, is very small to fit in the diminutive box that the camera comes in. It also allows you to put it on the shelf and find it easily. Next, the print size is much larger and easier to read, and the publisher/author has chosen a font that is easy on the eyes. The book employs a two-column format, which is also easier on the eyes, which allows you to look at the material for an extended time. Finally, color pictures of the screen and sample photos are placed throughout the book at the appropriate places to make the text easier to follow and to help you in duplicating the procedures in your own camera. The book is crammed with information that is laid out in a logical, thoughtful manner. You can easily see the development of the book was a labor of love. At some 230 pages, you can imagine the amount of content. The content is clearly written, logically laid out, and was not thrown together (like we see in some other camera books). The index is well done, too. I tested the index on a particular item that I thought might not be represented, because it is a somewhat obscure item, and there it was, right in the index, and when I went to the page, the author not only described the feature but how to set it up.The book is built in a camera-centric manner. That is, the book comes from the vantage point of learning the camera, and from there, the techniques to use based on that knowledge. That’s exactly what you want in a book like this because the “art” of photography is a horse of a different color. (It's true you need to know how your camera works in order to take great shots, but knowing how a camera works doesn't guarantee great shots.) Having said that, there are plenty of examples of how to use the various settings in the camera to achieve a certain photographic output.I was really delighted when I first reviewed the book. I do not know if the author has also made a book on the Fuji X-T2, but I’m going to look right now, as soon as I post this review, and if he has, will plan on purchasing it right away. I can highly recommend this book to any owner of the Sony RX100M5, as this tiny camera is bristling with features that are not easily recognized without a text like this. An EASY five stars.

Super-best RX100M5 Camera Manual - Kindle TOC Problem

*by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2017*

A really great book, easy to read and chockfull of valuable information, up to the appendices. Before buying this, I read all of David Bush's excerpts and found it too similar to his Nikon hardcopy that I owned for years and didn't like for it populistic writing style. But this version by White is written in a most neutral style, reads pleasant and non-pretentious, and evidently uses pictures as examples he made with the camera that he reviews. That again is in stark contrast with some other camera reviewers who often appear to dig out some seemingly non-relevant collection of images to impress readers. Many of those reviewers also use a lot of white space and large sentence white-spacing to ultimately impress with a high number of pages. This book by White contains far more information and is very well structured in my opinion, such that it can be used as a quick reference and does not make you dig through fluff before retrieving what you once read and now only vaguely remember. - I subtracted one star however, because the Kindle Table of Content is a bit of a mess and appears as one long list of entries without much clarity; no font changes, no bold or italics, no clear numbering. It does not jive with the TOC of the book itself when viewing it on Kindle and so the Kindle TOC Chapters are indistinguishable from any other TOC entry. That way you cannot easily finish a chapter and continue next time, without using bookmarks, or go to one of the chapters the writer so often references to. I tried each and every setting in Kindle and search for hours on Amazon and Google to fix it, but without resolve. This in my mind is a fundamental mistake of the writer or publisher and should have been corrected before publishing. Otherwise, this is a great, valuable book with an enormity of superb content.

    Very thorough coverage

Very exhaustive coverage--but with this camera, it has to be. Well organized, but could use a few cross references in text.
