The thickness is perfect, and the surface is smooth and perfect for exercising. I know that I will be able to do lunges and kicking exercises without damaging the surface.My only complaint is that there was a dirt mark in the center of the mat when I received it, so I would call that damage. I should have taken a picture, but it is already in the box to be exchanged. We'll see how easy this process is. It is around a half inch in thickness, I have bad knees and didn’t have a problem using this over hardwood floors. My only complaint is it is very difficult to get the mat back into the carrying case. I have years of experience packing for field marches in the military and packing for motorcycle trips. Due to the anti slip nature of the mat and the design of the bag (you have to slide the whole mat in from one end), it is next to impossible to get the mat back into the bag. This is not only a pain in the behind, but since the bag is cheap nylon, I foresee it ripping very quickly.
