The original straps were a thicker, stiffer, and heavier. Also, the original straps used a sharp friction mechanism in the fastener, which eventually caused the straps to wear out right where the fastener meets the strap.These straps are lighter and easier to manipulate. The fasteners use a little roller with teeth that spins on an axis to grab the strap if it loosens, but allows it to freely tighten.
