## Description

This extraordinary member of the poppy family is native and endemic to California and is among the protected species there due to its destruction as a result of development. These tall, branching, deciduous shrubs have gray-green foliage up to 5 inches long with 3-5 lobes and a waxy texture. One of the tallest members of the poppy family, this species also boasts the largest blooms in the genus which closely resemble fried eggs. In summer, many four-inch, delicate, crepe-like blooms are formed at the tops of tall stems each bearing six white crinkled petals and fluffy centers comprised of many yellow stamens. Blooms have a faint citrus scent most noticeable when in full bloom. The common name, matilija poppy is named after Chief Matilija of the Chumash tribe. In the stalk, there is a clear to yellowish liquid substance that the Cahuilla used to drink. The plant is used medicinally for skin and gum problems and stomach upset. The Chumash people believed the petals of the flower were made from the soul of a maiden, who died of a broken heart. Their Chumash gods transformed her into the pure white petal. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 15-60 days but is commonly slow and erratic. Smoke treatment advised for best results.
