I bought one and two 3 amp batteries from amazon. **Q: Does this charge all 4 batteries at once or does it charge one at a time?** A: I did some experimentation with the number of batteries that are changed. This will change 2 batteries at a time and once complete go to the next one/two. The right side is a pair and the left side is a pair. You can charge only one battery at a time on the two left chargers and only one batter at a time on the right two charges. The first battery inserted starts receiving the charge and will continue until full/complete. Once complete the other (if there is one) on the mated left or right pairing will begin charging. There does not seem to be any impact if you start with the inner or outer charging port of the mated pair (left or right pair). Putting just two batteries on the left mated pair or the right mated pair results in only one battery being charged even with only two batteries on the DC18SF. For just a few bucks more than the dual charger, I got this one that can charge 2+2. The big selling point for me was that it is wall mountable. I am fixing up a basement utility room as my home workshop and I want as many things out of the way as possible. I frequently use more than 4 of my Makita cordless tools at a time so being able to keep all the batteries fresh is a big deal. If you are in that position as well, I highly recommend this charger over some of the other options. I am not going to go into the same detail as other reviewers, I think they have answered the bulk of the questions and discussed the chargers capabilities and drawbacks. I do want to point out one thing: The LEDs will flash as long as this thing has power.
